    Wormington shirt makers, Worcester Street

Another early view of the Wormington premises. Don't know the date. I wonder what the interesting looking tower was in the background? Can just make out "Hippodrome" on original. Surely not a theater at that date?

    Gilbertstone

The Gilbertstone: a little known furore The Gilbertstone was a glacial erratic from North Wales. William Dargue's brilliant site thinks it was probably named after the Gilbert family who were land owners in the area in the medieval period. It was originally at the junction of Manor House...

    Moseley Village

Many thanks for that. Clevedon Rd is not far away in Balsall Heath which would make sense. Looks like original buildings all demolished & area redeveloped.

Whoops, forgot to attach photograph for above post. Apols.

    Moseley Village

I've attached this village photograph for all sorts of reasons. I think it may be late 1950s. Perhaps someone could date it more accurately? Subsequent changes etc include: 1. Original frontage on Boots the Chemist before they "vandalised" it with the present modern frontage. Boots now closed...

    Moseley Letter Box

Yes, the fake Tudor white house is an eyesore but frankly that's got nothing to do with the issue. Have you bothered to read all the posts on this thread or do you just believe that property owners should be allowed to do just what they want regardless of the law? We have planning laws and...

    Moseley Letter Box

It is nearly a year ago that retrospective planning permission was sought. In the meantime the applicant has continued with [illegal] building work. Here's what the planning Dept. had to say last week: "The application is still ongoing, I am waiting for clarification on a couple of issues...

    Stamp Albums.

Stamp collecting! This brings back memories. Started collecting at an early age. I remember buying a few stamps from a small book of approvals someone had at school. Too expensive to buy many. Also remember when I was about 10 going into the library and asking the assistant if I could borrow the...

    Wormington shirt makers, Worcester Street

Very interested in the Wormington Family. Carried out some research on them as part of a project to record & research families on remaining gravestones at St Marys Church, Moseley. This is the link to the Wormington entry on St Marys Church, Moseley website...

    Bloomsbury ( Lingard) Library Nechells

Hi, I think Bloomsbury "Library" has moved to The POD in Oliver Street. It looks as if the original Victorian building is in other use. Street View has a sign over the entrance suggesting that it is now used as a day care centre. Hopefully this means that the building is safe for the time being.

    Pacifism in Birmingham’s history

Can I mention Harry H. Payne who was well known for the large shoe repair business he built up in Birmingham. Harry was called up in 1916 and went before a tribunal arguing that he would not assist the war effort on Christian grounds. He was imprisoned until Jan 1919. Although Harry was...

    Bus Garages

I remember the bus garage at Selly Oak very well - used to go past it daily for many years on the way to Harborne. It was originally a tram depot. Now a storage warehouse.

    Dishley baptised twice

Interesting thread. The Book of Common Prayer [Church of England] states that "the Minister of every parish shall warn the people that without great cause and necessity they procure not their children to be baptized at home in their houses. But when need shall compel them so to do, then...

Graves at St. Mary's Church, Whittall Street

See thread under St Mary's Chapel Whittall Street post 6: which states: St Mary's was demolished in 1927 and the Western half of the land used for the site of the General Hospital, 1927. All coffins were removed to Witton cemetery. The Eastern half was cleared 1952-3 with 2,497 coffins to...

    Moor Green connections to Hockley??

Very interesting thread. Moseley church was for hundreds of years a chapel in the Parish of Kings Norton. It wasn’t until 1853 that Moseley was granted a fully defined boundary and it became a completely separate parish in 1866. Moor Green was included in Moseley at the dates mentioned. Moor...

    Trafalgar road moselely

Really enjoyed reading this. What a lot of info & history. Sadly "The Trafalgar" has been renamed "The Patrick Cavanagh". Not sure why but I can't help but feel another small piece of Moseley's history gone.

Scams: Telephone, email, texts, other 2021

Smart Meters - what an interesting thread. Here's an interesting quote - "the full cost of the smart meter rollout, of over £11bn, will have to be recouped from consumers through higher energy bills. This could work out at £374 per household, a figure that looks likely to rise as the full...

Scams: Telephone, email, texts, other 2021

I watched the u tube video "The Great smart meter swindle" with interest. I also read the adverse comments on it from David Grain & Morturn. I have never understood the purpose/value of smart meters - I would get nothing out of having one and have have always declined having one. The video...
