    Formans Road Sparkhill.

Caggyken : sorry, I don't have a date for the picture above. But if I had to guess …. the lack of motor traffic, and the clothing on pedestrians, suggests 1930s to me.

    Stratford Road

Here's another interesting photo of Stratford Road in Sparkhill …. looking away from town, showing the scene outside the Council House. The wonderful lampposts are outside the main entrance, which later became the library entrance. . Dated as c1910.

Ref Stitcher's Post #6 (6 years ago!) …. Turner's seed shop was 2 doors up from Springfield Post Office. I remember going there to get dried peas for my spring-powered Skeedon gun in the 1960's. The shopkeeper wasn't keen on selling the peas to young oiks for playing, and I had to promise that I...

    Air raid shelters

Ref my Post #359 : I believe the shelter was being installed after my grandad and family had been bombed out of another house 4 doors down. In that house they had used one of the metal table shelters inside the property. I suspect they were hoping for more protection by putting a shelter in the...

    Air raid shelters

A hole dug to accommodate a garden air raid shelter in Thornhill Road, Sparkhill …. providing a temporary play area for my cousin.

    Brighton Arms Balsall Heath

The title of this thread refers to the Brighton Arms, Balsall Heath. That pub was near the other end of Brighton Road from the Brighton pub .... just past the railway bridge. Picture attached.

    Horseshoe Hotel Stratford Road

There's a grainy view of the Horse Shoe in 1952 on the excellent britainfromabove site .... https://britainfromabove.org.uk/en/image/EAW044054 Register to get the zoom facility. It's a rear/side view, but shows the building had been re-modelled prior to that date.

    Horseshoe Hotel Stratford Road

Definitely the Horse Shoe on Stratford Road, Hall Green. Attached is a picture of the school that used to stand nextdoor (on the corner of School Road) .... showing the Horse Shoe in the background.

    Stratford Road

Thanks to Birmingham Library for providing a better print of this view, with attached notes .... "Stratford Road corner of Stoney Lane. Photographed 1872. The house within the palings was occupied for many years by the late Mr. Simcox. Solicitor." Thomas Simcox, solicitor, is shown in the 1871...

    Formans Road Sparkhill.

Only minnows and sticklebacks in my day Radiorails .... but I recall being told by an old angler that he used to catch trout in that stretch of the Cole in earlier times.

    Formans Road Sparkhill.

I also spent lots of time playing in (and falling in) the Cole by Formans Road. Here's a Nicklin photo dated 1968, taken from the bridge. It shows the tree where I built a treehouse at about that time.

    Formans Road Sparkhill.

Here's a couple of old Formans Road pictures that haven't appeared in this thread yet. I lived around the corner in Thornhill Road 1956-1977, and frequently visited lots of the shops named above. In the late 60's I delivered meat for Halliwell's the butcher on the corner of Formans and Percy...

    Birmingham Anglers' Association

In the late 60's the BAA setup a junior section imaginatively called the Birmingham Junior Anglers Society ... which was run by a lovely guy named Ken Aske. The club was subsequently renamed the Starlets. I joined the club when I was about 12, and remained a member until I discovered girls (...

    Sparkhill Baths

I walked past the new Sparkhill Baths building a few days ago .... and I think it looks good. As a young lad, I spent a huge amount of time swimming, diving and generally playing about in the old baths. I walked there from Greet Primary School, went there from Moseley Grammar, and remember...

    Stratford Road

Can anyone identify where this 1873 picture was taken .... I think it could be looking towards town from what is now the Formans Road junction, but there are no landmarks to corroborate ?
