    Self pay?

I see self service tills as being a convenience particularly when I just have a few items. I was in Ikea recently and the queues for the manned tills were horrendous, I was out in 5 minutes and their self service facility was a delight to use with an assistant standing near to help if necesary...

On reflection it may have been round, the excesses of the night before can have effects on your memory bless. It was however delicious Jean.

Sausages just ain't what they used to be.

Now I know this is going to cause uproar but.... for the first time in years, and in desperation because I was starving I visited a McDonalds for breakfast. The scrambled eggs were disgusting, the fried potato was like an inedible pork scratching... but the sausage was absolutely delicious, the...

    Cholera

https://www.ayrshireroots.com/Genealogy/Reference/Plagues%20z.htm This site mentions a cholera epidemic starting in Birmingham in 1853,regretably there is not a lot of other information when googled. Cholera epidemics were not uncommon prior to the public heath act of 1848 and the sanitation...

Sausages just ain't what they used to be.

Chatsworth farm shop produces the most fabulous sausages, go a week before you buy them and you can see the pork running around the pens. The second best sausages, as is their Black Pudding and faggots are from the butchers in Wednesfield High St. Both are a little far from Gt Barr but worth it...

    Your Claim To Fame

Having worked in Childrens hospitals most of my working life I had the pleasure of meeting many celebrities. There were many, but those that come to mind are: The Duke of Edinburgh* Princess Margaret* Princess Diana* Kojak Victor Bruno* Steve Davies* Jasper Carrot* UB40* Nobby Stiles Bobby...

The New Adventurers What a bloody eyesore

That colour looks nice on a well known pottery make...but on a pub its awful. One cannot doubt the breweries sense of humour.... or is it colour sense.

    Scout Jamboree Sutton park

I was only 6 when my dad took me to the park to see the scouts. All of the photos of that era were taken on a box brownie camera, not sure if 35mm film was available then but the small photos did tend to get easily mislaid. Probably the reason not a lot of the jamboree still exist.

    Pudding.

Hi Jean An angel amongst cats which makes his passing even the more sadder. If I could find a cat like that I would have one. Take care John

    Pudding.

What a beautiful expressive face Pudding has, you must all be devestated at his loss. He is almost certainly in feline heaven, again in his prime terrorising the bird population. I have an 18 year old Jack Russell miniature that and he is failing fast, I dread the moment when he has to take his...

Burial of someone who committed suicide

There is one important distinction that I dont think anyone has made yet in this thread. Church graveyards are under the control of the clergy and suicides may have been refused burial on the basis that the act was a mortal sin. Cemetaries on the other hand were and are under the jurisdiction of...

    Hospitals' history webpage launched

Prof Robert "Rob" Allen was a consultant gastroenterologist who after many years service at Birmingham General went to work at Selly Oak Hospital on BGH closure. He was not only a talented physician but a true gentleman. I am delighted Rob is a co author of the new site but I would have even...

    Key Hill Cemetery

In the not too distant past I spent a great deal of time in Keyhill and the only bad experience I had was with a couple of methadone addicts swigging their elixir behind a public grave memorial. As Keyhill was a non conformist burial ground those churches encouraged the concept of "we bring...

Taylor Martha and George James Davies

Re: Martha Taylor and George James Davies Thank you for the suggestion but there was as much as a 12 month interval after martha left the address so it seems they did go there separate ways. I did check the passenger lists and again came to a dead end.

Taylor Martha and George James Davies

This is one frustrating mystery. Martha Taylor and George Davies were the parents of my father John Louis Samuel Davies born in November 1919. I have traced the lineage of his parents but what happened to Martha and George is an absolute mystery. I know they were resident in Dawlish Road Selly...

    Sweeneys , tv rentals

My dad used to rent a TV from Les Smith, a radio and television shop in Witton Road. Les Smith was an Aston Villa player and I remember him commenting on my thighs saying I would make a good player. If he only knew I was to develop a lifelong loathing of the sport. I also remember there was no...

    Melancholia.

Queen Victoria was reported to have suffered a state of profound melancholy for almost 20 years following the death of Albert. Thought the dictionary definition appears exact in truth it can be applied to any permanent case of sadness or depression brought about by a major life event-and...
