    Restoration of KDZ 5805

:) Brilliant youtube video Tom, you are clearly a man of many talents. One thing that occurs to me is that now the days are becoming short a generator and floodlights would be very useful for evening work :D

Though I never had the pleasure of meeeting Peter his articles sparkled with both accuracy and clarity and gave me many hours of enjoyment. RIP Peter and condolences to his family.

    Aston Park Tragedy 1863

If you had read my post correctly Lloyd you would have noted I used the phrase "on casual observation, the article did look academic" though clearly it is not. I further commented that I enjoy detail. My opinion, and you will recall comments were invited was that the article was extremely...

    Rationing

Thank you for the photo, very interesting. Fortunately I was not born during the war years but can still remember vaguely the rationing of some things during the early 1950s.I watched the Turn Back Time programme on WW2 last night and my interpretation was not they were starving but eating...

    Aston - Trinity Road

Having looked at the photo again, the trees are bare so it was taken in the winter, the appearance of the road surface may have been slush from a recent snow fall. There looks to be a layer of snow on top of a lamp and everyone is wrapped up warmly.

    Aston - Trinity Road

Thanks for these Ian, the earliest photo is the first I have ever seen of Trinity Rd. Both taken from just below the church looking down towards Witton. Though a prosperous road in 1904, the photograph shows what looks to be an unsurfaced road.

    Mitchell's & Butler's Ltd.

Hi Bill I had this pint at the Jewellers Arms in Hockley St .Food was excellent, cheap and plentiful but the beers....deary me were all pasteurised, main brand brands, not a single real ale. Its a very interesting pub to visit as it is largely unchanged catering for those working in the area.

    jewellery quarter pics

Hi Paul The jewelery quarter is still a thriving manufacturing/retail area. The main retail area is Vyse St but there are a huge number of workshops both small and large in the surrounding streets. I was in the area last week and was amazed at the number of almost Dickensian workshops that...

    jewellery quarter pics

What a find Lyn, superb photograps. It really focuses the mind when you see the number of youngsters employed at this time. I wander if any of these family firms still exist?

    Mitchell's & Butler's Ltd.

I experienced a pint of M&B brew X1 recently for the first time in 30 years. Its as awful now as it was then and I have no idea how the company survived selling such pap as that. Thank goodness for micro breweries where real beer is brewed.

    Maternity Hospital Heathfield Road

Thanks lyn but sadly it is Heathfield Hall which was in the land between north and south roads. Even authors get it wrong sometimes. I spoke to the education dept this morning who have promised to ask the builders (if they still exist) as to whether any predemolition scenes exist and also to...

    Heathfield Road Handsworth

Thanks for the photos Max, we are getting closer! According to Wiki, Heathfield Estate Heathfield Hall Architect Samuel Wyatt had developed a friendship with Matthew Boulton, for whom he designed Soho House in 1789. In 1790, Boulton recommended Wyatt to his friend James Watt, for whom...

    Maternity Hospital Heathfield Road

The site is now a school and yes, a playground does take up the area where the building must have been. There are so many original buildings remaining in Heathfield rd, why couldn't they have left our hospital alone!

Can you name the team members?

Nice photo Rowan, alas none of my ancestors are there. A year after that photo was taken we were at war, I wonder how many of these young men lost their lives in that conflict

    Maternity Hospital Heathfield Road

Heathfield Maternity Hospital had an annexe in Trinity Rd where mothers to be were nursed in early labour before being taken to the main hospital for delivery. My brother was actually born there so they didnt always get the timing right. Will check the house number on his birth certificate and...

Pauper Memorial in West Bromwich Cemetery

A lovely memorial Wendy, thank you for the photographs. Though the workhouse system had many faults we have to be mindful that it was all that was available at the time for the poor and homeless. Without the workhouses many would have starved or died of the cold.
