    Dorridge - Poplar Road

For some reason I seem to think it was Band and Meeks in Knowle. Drove down Knowle High Street this week and it does seem a bit altered. My friends Mum and Dad used to run the Post Office and also a taxi business. Seem to remember there was an antique shop nearby as well.

    Sun ray treament

Re: Sun Ray Treatment Hadnt thought about the sun ray treatment in years and years. All these posts took me right back though. Think I went to the Childrens Hospital and yes I remember stripping down to the waist and wearing the goggles and oh yes you never forget that smell. Not sure why I had...

    Dorridge - Poplar Road

Hi Bernie, I'm not 100% certain, it is 50 years back I suppose. Maybe the 'little grey cells' are not what they were (as Poirot would say.)

Hi there Changinman1 I lived in Hanbury Rd from August 1958 til October 1968 when I got married. My parents had the house from new, built by good builders Youell and Parker long gone by now I expect. Our next door neighbour was Dick Spooner who played cricket for Warwickshire (wicket keeper I...

    Dorridge - Poplar Road

Wouldnt mind a pound for every time I've walked up there before I was married. I lived in Hanbury Rd and I think the shop shown was Drinkwaters who sold flowers or veg. On the other corner was Cock & Thexton who were grocers. You wrote your order in a book and they delivered it by van. Bit...

    Harrisons Opticians

Does anyone out there have any info about the early days of Harrisons Opticians? My Grandads sister married Andrew Harrison and family legend says he invented Orbito pads which are the pads which hold your specs on your nose.

    Norman Wisdom

Yes I saw the programme about the Paladium. Quite a few faces from way back including a very young Jimmy Tarbuck and Brucie as well. Dickie Valentine was very good looking ~ no wonder he was one of the heart throbs of the day.

    peaky blinders book

I bought the book to give me some idea of what it was like then as I had found that my grandad's brother died aged 18 at about that time. It says on his gravestone that he was 'killed.' When I got a copy of his death certficate, apparantly he died riding his bike too fast! Not nearly what I had...

    RAF Lichfield

St. Georges Barracks ~ this is just up the road from me and only some of the barracks was sold off for housing and flats. There are still some 2 storey buildings (possibly 4 training) and also some housing for military personnel I think.

    Norman Wisdom

Yes Izzy, that would be the one. Must have been great that I can remember it so well even after all these years.

    Norman Wisdom

Does anyone remember seeing the late great Norman Wisdom do a routine where he got tangled up in the strings of a harp? Probably this would be mid 50's and it was the funniest thing I have ever seen, before or since. My Mom laughed so hard I thought they would need to carry her out. Know what...

    Joe Brown

Does anyone remember seeing Joe Brown at the Bham Hipp (I think) in the early 60's. He topped the first half. When the curtain came up he was standing side ways on to the audience in a red suit. When he turned to face the crowd, the other half of his suit was yellow! It was not my Mom's cup of...

    756 Coventry Road Small Heath

Happy Christmas to you as well. Mikes Dad and mine were part of a family of 11 and so I have 30 plus cousins! Sadly as time has gone by families scatter and I am only in touch with a few cousins now which is a shame but that's probably how it is with large families. I probably haven't seen Mike...

Southall William George Electoral roll 1940

Re: Electoral roll 1940 Thank you very much for that, wonder why he was listed as George William and not William George. Still it must be my aunt and uncle ~ thank you for checking them out for me.
