    Peter walker.

Remembering Peter today. He is often in my thoughts. A kind and knowledgeable man. I learned so much about Birmingham from his contributions to the site and the kindness he and his wife showed to me when I went to stay with them in Croydon. Unforgettable memories.

Yorkswood York’s Wood camp site Castle Bromwich

Thanks for this extensive history of Yorkswood. So interesting to through this important piece of local history. There has always been a great interest in Yorkswood for Brummies over the years as so many of the boys went to camp there, including my brother who was in a cub group in Erdington in...

    Witton lakes park

I lived close by to Witton Lakes Park-the Woolmore Entrance. I spent so many days in the Park in all seasons over the years and knew just about every aspect of it. So many memories of fishing, playing games, watching my brother play cricket, the fairs that came from time to time, the model...

    Street furniture

Hi Phil: After the war on the Odeon side of New Street were several bus shelters and people would form long queues all the time. I hope that there are some photos around because I can remember the shelters being there.

    Upper Dean Street, Birmingham

I worked at 45 Upper Dean Street for 18 months in 1959 at Francis Nicholls (Wholesale Grocers) Ltd. This building amazingly is a heritage building and is still standing in an awful state. It shows up in one of your Flickr photos horsencart. It was a great area to be working in back in the day.

New Street Station (phased redevelopment completed 2015)

Yes, the old 1950's New Street Station was rather grim and dirty. I worked there in the office in 1957/58 and had great times exploring the platforms and waiting rooms especially in the winter where you could always find a cheerful fire going even though the rooms were dull and sparse. Spent a...

New Street Station (phased redevelopment completed 2015)

I expect Brummies will still refer to the Railway Station as New Street Station and not Grand Central Station as the large sign says.

New Street Station (phased redevelopment completed 2015)

Dave, you mean the platforms are still dark and dreary. Too bad if they are. I did notice that they have lifts down to each platform now. I won't have to accost strong men to carry my cases down and up when I visit. Or look for the freight lifts which were hidden away in dark and remote areas...

    Artists Who Painted Birmingham Landscapes

In the James Billingsley painting on the far right looks like the old Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital. So I would place the modern view at around Church Street or Newhall Street. I worked at Devonshire House not far from there for a while.

    Summer Lane Pubs

Good news indeed Lyn. A lot of Brummies wouldn't believe how many pubs there were along Summer Lane at one time.

    Unknown street

I remember passing by the Birmingham Settlement in the 1950's and wondered for years after what the building was for it looked so different from any other buildings in the Summer Lane area. Years later I found more about it and I like Dr. Carl Chinn's account of the Birmingham Settlement from...
