Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

I went with 2 girls that I worked with at Edward Grey Dept. Store in Bull Street to the Brum Cavern a couple of times. I think this was in Small Heath, just off the main road. I saw the Cheetahs there and also met my husband there. He asked me for a dance as I was left out and my answer was...

Mother's Club Carlton Club Ballroom Erdington

Carlton/Mothers Hi, I went to the Carlton a few times in 1964 and remember having to wait in a long queue at the side of the furniture shop below before being allowed up the steps for ages on end. I know that we saw P.J.Proby there. I was living in Four Oaks then and went to school in...

    Torch and Bonfire

My husband and I are both Brummies but we speak somewhat differently. For instance I pronounce Bonfire as Bonfire whereas he calls it a BUNfire as did his work partners over 20 years ago. These partners all had to go to work as Electrical Contactors in Pakistan where they got talking to the...

BAB,when are you too old to be 'Bab'

Round the Wrekin I still say "Going round the Wrekin", especially with the bus services that we have in Tamworth. Some say "Going round the houses" instead as they go through and round the housing estates.

BAB,when are you too old to be 'Bab'

Bab When I got married my father-in-law always called me Bab which I hated. He only stopped calling me that though when my son was born as he then became the Bab (baby) of the family, or Babby as F-I-L would say. He also called me Wench which was another name that I didn't like.

we've all said it....but where did it come from?

According to my book, Arley and Arley-Barley comes from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, written in the 14th century. At the beginning of the poem the gigantic green stranger at King Arthur's court challenges any man to strike him with an axe "so long as I shall have leave to launch a return...

    Greys Department Store

Greys Department Store Hi Peter, I expect that I knew your mother and sister when at Grey's. I can remember that the glove department was on the ground floor, to the left of the building, when I was there. I did get to know almost everyone's name but over the years have forgotten some. The...

    Sutton Park History

Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield The red rose emblem that I mentioned was actually named the Tudor Rose. There was a building more or less opposite to where the Police Station is now and near to the college grounds there used to be a Careers Office in the early 60's where one of these was hung...

    Greys Department Store

Greys Department Store Hi dav19390, I believe that I knew your mother in law when at Grey's. Did she work with someone called Jean who was very slim with auburn hair, and Janet Aston who was a teenager and also another lady (Mrs Smith, I think) of about middle aged? They worked in the "Till...

    Hockley Pubs

Lord Byron Hi Wales, Thanks you for your reply. I was told that it was in Newhall Street but maybe it wasn't. The Pooles were found on census for Newhall Street though ( maybe they just lived there) but that is fascinating that you found that a Stan Woolley ran the Lord Byron in later years as...

Two Rotten Jobs I applied for a Saturday job at the new Woolworths that was to open at Wylde Green in 1966/7 and was sent out to various stores for training before it opened. This included being sent to the sub-basement of the one in the Bull Ring where I had to wrap cheese into cling film all...

    Erdington Swimming Baths

In 1958-59 I used to have to walk from Birches Green junior school every day to the swimming baths in Erdington for a quick lesson, walk all the way back and then have dinner at school. I recall having a hot Oxo drink in the cafe at the baths. Even till this day I still can't swim!!

    Bingley Hall

I used to go to the Ideal Home Exhibition at Bingley Hall with my parents in the late fifties. My Mom bought one of those doughnut makers and managed to set the kitchen on fire when using it! Fortunately, it wasn't too bad but she threw the gadget away afterwards. I was then attending Birches...
