    Greys Department Store

George: Yes, Grey's was on Bull Street and backed onto the Great Western Arcade where there was an entrance that I, as staff, had to use when we left at night. In the morning we went to a side entrance off Bull Street to clock in by the Despatch Office. I think the Steelhouse Lane place was...

Hi Ex Brummie, I have just sent you a private message to tell you that I worked at Grey's and have now seen that you did too. In 1965, when I left, there was a woman called Penny in the cash office!!!, Was she still still there when you were there? My friend, Margaret Bromley, worked in the...

Last tram ever along Bristol Road

Thank you to you all who have replied. I loved watching the trams on UTube and recently saw the tram in the Think Tank Museum. As the last tram on Bristold Rd was in 1952 then it couldn't have been my grandfather who drove it so will have to tell my cousin that she has the story wrong.

    childhood punishments.

I can't remember my Dad ever giving me a "Good Hiding" on the legs or bottom but I did get some from Mom. Another time, when I was about 11 I had to give ALL my toys, books etc to my sister.

    Things you made at school.

When I was at Birches Green Junior School in Erdington we did cross stitch and embroidery. A piece of my work was put in the Ideal Home Exhibition at Bingley Hall and I won second place much to my amazement. At Riland Bedford High in Sutton we made a needlework apron with pockets in, had to...

    Kathleen Dayus

I have read many books by Kathleen Dayus, some more than once. I think that they must be my favourite books of all time. I also saw the film on TV.... A Bakers Dozen, that was based on her life. Although I did not know her, I went to her funeral at Yardley a few years ago and saw many from her...

    ATV Aston Studies-"Crossroads"

I worked in the Woolworths in the Bull Ring in 1965 or 66 and when going to the staff canteen could see members of the Crossroads actors going to a pub that was up those spiralled stairs. I remember seeing "Miss Diane" as Benny used to call her with others. During the 70s I went to Birmingham...

    Our First Telly

I was 5 years old at the time of the Coronation when we lived in Frederick Rd in Selly Oak but can remember helping putting out chairs for neighbours to come to watch it on our Tv. I soon got bored so went off to my bedroom to play. We kept that TV for donkeys years as it had 2 new tubes before...

    Erdington

Yes, the Old Market is still in Barnabas Road down the side of Woolworths and I go there every few weeks as my other hobby is card making and there is a very good area at the back for crafts. Going in there is like going back in time. Its hardly changed since the 60s and they always have old...

    Radiograms Stereograms

I remember big radiograms in wooden cabinets as my mother in law had one in the 60s, I used to have to put my son's carrycot on it. We never had one as we had a green and cream cased Dansette player and then later a small portable one in a red case before having another Dansette player.

I still call a sandwich a piecey at times and the understairs cupboard is called the cubby 'ole by me. I love to have a jam piecey in my donnies.

    Shopping in the sixties

I worked at Grey's 1963-5 and although I had a 12 and a half per cent discount I couldn't afford to buy clothes from there. I used to go to spend 19/11d at C&A when I got my wages which were £4 a week for office workers aged 15. I was told that was 10/- more than the Rackham's office workers...

    Shopping in the sixties

I still have a small round wooden table that I had with Green Shield stamps, we dig it out at Xmas to put the tree on. I also still have lots of reels of Sylko sewing cotton that were "purchased" with the stamps.
