    Holidays of the past

Hi Lozell Ian I recall that as we got older we were required to do more lengths to qualify for the free pass. I think I got up to 14 lengths before I left school. Worth it for the free swimming, especially on long summer holidays. Life saving was not part of my schools programme. If you could...

    Holidays of the past

A very long story as to why I chose the Royal Marines. Short version is that as a lad the furthest I had ever been from Birmingham was the distance you could travel in a day and return home by bike. So Warwick,Stratford and Kenilworth was the extent of my travels. So decided to join HM Forces and...

    Holidays of the past

On the 29 October this year,2019,it will be 50 years since I first saw the sea. I was on a train from London to Deal in Kent to join the Royal Marines. I was travelling in the company of another Brummie,Dave Cashmore,we were both sixteen years old. I glanced out of the window somewhere around...

    Societies: Tree Lovers' League

Several of us from St George's School,Beaufort Rd planted trees in Cawdor Crescent in about 1962. We were all given a badge; chrome and green if I recall correctly. Seemed a little odd even to my young self ,many trees had been cut down to build the houses and flats in Cawdor Crescent. The...

    Hartfield Crescent Ninestiles School

I also attended this school from about February 1965 to Easter 1968. I recall Mr Grindy as being the art teacher. Two maths teachers Mr Collier and Mr McEwan. Both had the propensity to caning for any minor misdemeanor. In my experience (4 Birmingham schools) all maths teachers lived by the cane...

What do you watch on tv nowadays ?

Love the old comedy shows,Hi De Hi,Man about the house,George and Mildred, I could go on but you get my drift. Currently enjoying Shelley. I am a former Royal Marine but never watch fictional military programmes. So much is wrong it makes me cringe. Also my wife hates me shouting at the tv.

    Balsall Heath.

Sorry I have only scant information about my own heritage in Balsall Heath. I am trying to find more info from my cousins. I believe they may have some family records from the time our parents/Grandparents lived in Wrentham St. If I find anything that may be of interest to you I will pass it on...

    Balsall Heath.

I really have no knowledge of the family much before about 1958/59 when I was about 5. I think I need find if other members of the Dunn have memories or records of the family. Snag is,I am the eldest so their memories are probably worse than mine. Funny how a small thing can trigger an interest...

    Bomb Pecks

1964/65 spent many a happy hour on the bomb pecks around the Lucas factory. Plenty of lead pipe and cast iron window sash weights to take to the tat yard. Made quite a few bob. Never heard the expression bomb peck until we moved from Edgbaston to Hockley. Happy days NoddK-D

    The Boys Brigade

I joined the 1A Life boys in early 1963 at the Peoples Chapel. I was 10 at the time, eventually moved on to the Boys Brigade. I recall we paraded in Harry Lucas School in Farm St. I played football a few times for the Company at sports field in/near Perry Barr. I usually walked there from...
