They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

AH! Those old peeking blinders! The chalked court number had probably been put there by the photographer. I think it was Cadburys that arranged for photographs of "slums" (to the residents they were little palaces) to be taken during the clearances. To identify the location the photographer...

    Duke of York, Doe Street

Doe Street (and Buck Street) look as if they were buried under Jennens Road - the dual carriageway south of Aston University. (Sorry - a bit late to this thread)

Elkington's Electroplating Works were in Newhall Street on the corner of Fleet Street. Most of us would be familiar with the building as it became the Science Museum (memorable as being so much better than the Disneyfied Thinktank!). Sadly most of it has been demolished with just a small part...

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

I think that there is something interesting going on to the left of the photograph that the photographer has missed! The dog, the bloke by the cart and the snubbed lady using an umbrella as a sunshade are all looking in the same direction. No wait a minute, there's a policeman over there too! Is...

Probably right Di. I can't imagine yellow plastic grit bins in the 1940s Brum streets. Maybe they put one there to give the trams setting off from the terminus a bit of grip. What we need now are those keepers of great street scenes posting photos of pavements on hills, especially tram routes...

What a great tram photo! It does of course raise a number of questions. The tram is at a terminus, as the passengers are getting on at what appears to be the front as the collector pole is at the other end, so this has yet to be changed round. There is also a Bundy clock. However where is it? It...

If you propped a bike up like that now it would be flattened or knicked. Oh how times have changed!!!

You seem to have made the same mistake as me - it's not Carrs Lane, but Albert Street - 60 years makes memories fade I think. I've checked 1956 Kellys against the three photos and the one with the tram is Carrs Lane. Maybe someone can confirm if I'm right here but the tram is "coasting" down...

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

I can remember this scene from the late 50s. My mom would take me into "town" shopping and in the afternoon (before the rush hour) we'd go to the News Theatre (on the right of the photo) for the cartoons. I worked on petrol pumps in the late 60s in Acocks Green & Olton and petrol then was about...

    Summer Lane

I called the HB Sale building the "Flatiron" until I got to find out more about it. It is probably a beautiful building in the wrong place! The plants around the top are probably buddleia, the curse of old buildings, especially on railway structures where it can be difficult to get at. There...

The car on the right is an early Standard 8 - it had sliding windows and no boot lid. I drove one once - it accelerated like a milk float and cornered like a tea trolley!

I couldn't resist joining in the Sufflebotham thread. The date of 1930 is probably quite close for the interior and the exterior shot with the vans & the "dolls house" trailer, especially as they seem to have got into trouble by 1933. The next photo is taken some time after 1995 as the estate...

That is a Bollard and it's there to prevent the drivers of long vehicles turning left out of the side road and squashing old ladies with prams!

In 1956 Joseph Reynolds (Fruiterer) had shop at 129 Balsall Heath Road and Gabel's Butchers had shop at 131 Balsall Heath Road. There is a ladies outfitters at no 133. The side road is therefore Longmore Street, and if so the pub was the Wallace Inn. Further research shows that 79-77 Longmore...

Lovely old photo. The same picture appears in the Cinema Treasures website but VERY grainy. Follow this link and it tells you about the Green Lane Picture House, the roof that fell in before it opened and who is using it now. https://cinematreasures.org/theaters/39680 I remember Pinnincks too...

He probably got his mates (in doorway) to give him a leg up there - or he was trying to escape from them in case they thumped him for having a clean shirt! Where was this taken? I can make out "West" on the road sign but not the rest.

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

Did people lean on lamp posts, walls or whatever in Victorian photos as there had to be a long exposure and they had to stand still? The photo would have been very special for them, a rarity and the photographer would have posed them with instructions to keep still. It's easier if you lean on...
