    Stratford Road

Just a couple of notes. The GWR station was Hall Green (not Spring Road), and the large traffic roundabout was the Robin Hood (not Fox Hollies).

    Stratford Road

Willmotts was on the corner of Cubley Road, not Green Road.

    Pubs of Hockley/Newtown

I'm a bit late joining in with this, but I came across a photograph of a Hospital Street pub posted elsewhere and there seemed to be some confusion as to where it was. I landed on this thread and found it useful, but around 2008 there seemed to some confusion here, or was it lost memories? I...

    Prefabs

I'm not sure if there was ever a reply to your question, but .... The prefabs were built after the end of the war. So there would be no need to use the Anderson Shelter componenets as air-raid shelters. Doubtless the curved corrugated componenets were produced in enormous quantities and after...

    Prefabs

Yes, just one , it was at 85 Moat Lane.

    Prefabs

Just picked up on this thread. The government of the time intended 500,000 new prefabs to be built, however it turned out there were just over 150,000. One reason was that they were costing much more to manufacture and erect than houses built using conventional techniques (chippes & brickies)...

    Stratford Road

The photograph that includes the "Metropolitan Bank" has a number of buildings next to the bank at an angle. These were demolished and a cinema built on the site called the Picturedrome which opened in 1912. So that dates the photograph as pre-1912. The Picturedrome was demolished in 1929 and...

    Cambridge Inn, Cambridge Street

I know it has been six years since anyone posted on this thread, but I thought it may be worth drawing your attention to this photograph. The site of the Cambridge Inn is where the multi-storey car park is opposite the back of Baskerville House in Cambridge Street on the corner of what is now...

    Birmingham buses

I bow to your superior knowledge Radiorails, however I never recall the roundabout at the Baldwin ever being anything other than a traffic roundabout, rather than a turning circle for the buses.

    Birmingham buses

And another one, 3247 is negotiating the roundabout at the Baldwin in Hall Green as it sets off on its cross city jaunt.

    Birmingham buses

Someone may have already said that the picture of VWK223 in WM livery is at the junction of Vicarage Road and Alcester Road South in Kings Heath. This was the early days WMPTE when the remaining rear entrance buses were drafted onto the Outer Circle as the OMO equipment couldn't cope with so...

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

The photograph is of 3227, a Daimler CVG6 with a Crossley body. The photograph would have been taken pre- 1969 as it still has the BCT crest on the side. In 1969 it was transferred to West Midland PTE. It was the last of the buses with open rear platforms and was destined to be preserved...

    Stratford Road

On the left is the wall to Cateswell Hall that later became Cateswell Barracks. The Wickes builders' merchants now stand on the site.

    Stratford Road

I think the Odeon is in New Street, and probably was then!
  15. OuterCircleBus

    Stratford Road

The Odeon Shirley was actually demolished, and replaced by the supermarket building that now stands on the site. The Midland (now HSBC) bank on the corner was incorporated into the new supermarket building.

    Stratford Road

The building on the corner of York Road (opposite the church) was Barclays Bank, the first house in York Road, next to the bank was called Bank House. After the bank closed the bank building was occupied by "Midland Music" which was a music instrument shop. Originally Midland Music had been...

The Unity Club Summer Lane Help Needed

Just found this thread. The only help I can offer is that the two photographs with the "Road Under Repair" barriers were I think taken in 1947 when there had been a fire in the club's building. You can see the charred rafters in both photographs. The barriers had been erected (I suspect) to keep...

    Royal George Tavern, Park Street/Digbeth

To draw a conclusion to this post , in October 2017 the Bull Ring Cinema and the Royal George buildings were demolished.

    Summer Lane

I'm sure this building was the frontage of the power station which stood on the site between Summer Lane and the canal. You can see it in this aerial photograph taken in 1937. Look to the left about half way up. The chimneys for the boilers are on the left and the cooling towers are on the land...

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

YES! The road slopes the wrong way for the Bull Ring entrance. And there's a few bollard protectors as well as a pair of horse trough protectors. They knew how to keep wheels away from stuff in those days! Dave
