    Emigration from Birmingham

Hi Thylacine, It would be fun to see the Alan Whicker "What is a Whinging Pom" programme again - at least it prepared us for what we would find when we got there. It'll b e a shame to lose your female PM before she's got her feet under the table. Sheri

    Emigration from Birmingham

As has been said "Poms" emigrated for a tenner - children free - we went in 1965 and went to a migrant hostel as did most people. You had to stay for two years or repay your outward fare (full price not £10) - I didn't feel bad about returning home it was the best thing for me and my children -...

My dad was also in a reserved occupation although he'd tried to enlist, they sent him back - he was a sheet metal worker and worked on Spitfires etc. at the Austin and other factories - I think he was a fire fighter as well.

    The Square Old Square

A snippet I found by chance. In 1750 there were 2 assembly rooms - 1 in Bull St and 1 in the Square which was the most fashionable but a remark by the Duke of York who attended a ball there in 1765, he said 'Birmingham deserved a superior accommodation, that the room was mean and the entrance...

    The Square Old Square

This is an interesting topic Aidan - my families wouldn't have been let either. My book doen't say much more about the Square itself but it does say about further develpments around the Square. Definition of “Brummie”, “Astonian” etc

Although I was born in Quinton and left Birmingham in 1960 I can trace some of my families back more than 200 years - I think of myself as a Brummie and proud of it.
