Thanks for that, Mike. It may be them but it somehow does not match what I seem to remember. Back in the 1960s I did visit the company I have in mind and the name Siviter Smith as I say doesn't chime. But then, perhaps my memory is not what it was! Siviter Smith is a name I do remember from...

    Old street pics..

Alan, I've been trying to remember the name of a printing/engraving company that used to occupy a building sandwiched between the canal and Water Street on Ludgate Hill. Do you remember the name? It's not there in Kellys 1940 edition.

No, Carolina. The Acme Engraving Co were designers and engravers of copperplate printed invitation cards, diestamped letterheadings, greeting cards, various embossing dies, even dies for printing beermats and embossing raised lettering on foil milktops. They also made dies for the iridescent...

Alan, by 'process' do you refer to photomechanical engraving? The Acme certainly adopted photo techniques after their move to Mucklow Hill. I left in 1965 after my appreniceship, by then they were getting involved in many forms such as 'powderless etching', as I remember.

Really enjoyed that trip along Constitution Hill, Phil, so thanks. Photo no. 1 #698 bring back the greatest personal pleasure for me however as 32 Hockley Hill was where I began my working life as an apprentice copperplate hand-engraver. In 1913 Fitter, Forbes & Co were listed in Kelly's as...

    Use of genealogy section

I also think it a good point even though up till now my input has been minimal. I've enjoyed following many of the threads for some time and am impressed by the knowledge, enthusiasm and sheer friendly helpfulness shown by members. I have not asked for genealogy help, so far at least, but have...

    old hockley pics

So frustrating not being able to see some of these photos due to the recent 'hacking' episode. I would love to see a photo of 32 Hockley Hill which was next to the Post Office which still stands. No 32 was the Acme Engraving Co, where I was apprenticed as a copperplate hand engraver in 1960. The...

    J Grinnel, Engraver

Thank you for your help, Shera and mikejee. The idea that it might read Grinsell is brilliant intuition, mikejee, and such a firm as the one you describe is more likely to employ a group of eight women.

    J Grinnel, Engraver

Does anyone please have any information on a small company in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter by the name of J Grinnell, Engravers? I have a small photo which appears to have been taken in the early 1930s showing a group of women posing next to this sign. A search on Ancestry Directories has...

    Dalton Bros George St West

I remember that corner well as I worked Saturdays in the greengrocers next to the betting shop in the early 60's. It was owned by Mike Kelly and he had an assistant Mrs Ann Sherridan. I've got a lot of happy memories of my Saturdays there, half a crown for the day, and very welcome it was. The...
