I'm in London, I come to Birmingham about 4 times a year, I'll see if I can fit it in next time. I wonder if there are other records I could look at such as the fire watch? My gut feeling is that there is something inherent to the medals / service that was the reason for giving them, otherwise...

I think it very likely that the medals were a gift to Minnie, hidden and forgotten at her death. It's much more likely that a widow living alone would hide medals, than a family. Is she on Ancestry? Did she and Thomas have any children?

My relatives the Bennetts bought 27 some time in the 60s i think. There was definitely another family there before them who had a disabled adult son, but weren't called Horton, or they'd have given the medals back as soon as they found them. 32 isn't opposite 27, it's a bit up the road, so even...

I'm thinking I will keep the medals, with a view to selling them to a collector in the future. I don't feel able to give them to a distant relative who probably isn't interested. I'll make sure whoever has them has a summary of what you've all found out, for which I thank you so much. George...

    Café in Icknield Street, Hockley

My grandparents Sydney and Irene Tibbatts ran a cafe with a dining room upstairs in Icknield Street, Hockley in the 1960s. Does anyone have any info, memories, photos?

Definitely looks more salubrious now. I could swear the ceilings and walls were painted black. It used to scare me lol.

Can anyone remember what the original question was on this thread? Asking because I'm a Tibbatts.

    Brummie Ghosts

I camped in a cemetery where over 350,000 people are buried, actually sleeping on top of unmarked graves. Also wandered around there alone at night several times. No ghostly occurrences. I think it's the living we should worry about.

Wow, I'd love to know what became of the baskets. They'd be worth a fortune now.

    Holy Trinity Church Bordesley.

Our family lived there, great grandad was caretaker of the school and my grandparents Sydney and Irene lived a few doors down. Say hello to anyone who remembers them for me.

I wonder why he enlisted with them? I read that they mainly recruited from a specific area of Scotland at that time. That was why I initially thought he was Scottish. The cycle connection is also interesting. Apparently before the Cycle Corps was put together, lots of regiments had their own...

I forgot to upload the pictures yesterday, here they are. Note George's sewing and that it appears the tin is lined with the tissue paper that originally wrapped the chocolate (I looked up photos of the rare tins with the chocolate still in). Also his lucky Italian coin and veteran association...

Yes indeed, and the medals are worth money, I don't want to give them to someone who never met George and will just sell them. I'd rather sell them myself and put them in the hands of a collector who appreciates them. The responsibility!
