    Onion Fair

I know that this post was a very long time ago, but as a newbie to this site, it triggered a memory. My Grandad, was Jack Hill. Jack was a boxer in the booths at the Onion Fair. Would anyone remember him?

I was at school in Heavitree, and used the OLD Devon general to Torquay, up Telegraph Hill, which was THE most exciting thing for a nine year old!

    Then & Now

Hi! I went to the Infants, in those sheds at the front of the school first, and my teacher was MISS or MRS BAKER. Then I went up to the big school, under Mr Waterton's headship. My friends that I recall were: MICHAEL BUTTS, MARY BAKER, FREDDIE JONES, ANN BOLTON, TONY BUCKLEY, FRANKIE SCOTT...

    Then & Now

Hi! I went to Beeches Road School, and remember these buses well. I walked to school though, from Calshot Road, along Turnberry Road and then past the shop up to the school. The head master was Mr. Waterton. That was in the early 1940's.

    Barrow's Chundah Tea?

I worked in Barrows in Birmingham, in the Greengrocery department. That would be in the late fifties, when I had just left school. We used to have a lady come in from Streetly, when we would find her a chair, and she would order her delivery. "A qtr of tomatoes, half a cucumber, a small lettuce...

Hi mate. The Destination Blinds had indications on them, so it was easier to find the correct one. These are for the National buses. For example: 24A and 24B, these were the FROM City and TO City destinations, next to each other. Hope this helps. Gerry.

Hi mate, no offence meant with the Wumpty name, but that is what we knew it as. For anyone interested, here are a few more bits that I found from my time driving buses. Thank you. Gerry

Unsure, but I can answer the question if you tell me something. Did he ever fly a helicopter? If he did, then yes of course. Cheers! Gerry.

Hi! Yes, we, that is Sutton Midland RED, only became WMPTE in that time frame, so these routes were NEW to us, that is what I was meaning. Thanks. Gerry.

This would have been 1976, when we had a VERY hot summer, especially whilst driving a bus! Thanks. Gerry.

Unsure if this is of any interest to bus fans. When we were taken over at Sutton Garage, by WUMPTY, we were given bits and pieces of paperwork. Also, and this was a bit unnerving ( as we were so used to OUR routes) we had to learn routes which took us PRIVATE into Brum, and then onto WUMPTY...

Back in the year of 1957 I was a conductor based at Sutton Coldfield, Midland Red garage. That was when they operated D5's and D7s. Later in 1975/6/7 I came back to Sutton Garage, and drove the D9, which was a favourite bus of mine. They took delivery in 1976 of the new Ailsa Volvo automatic...
