    Hodge Hill Church

I attended regularly in the late 50s & early 60s & was confirmed from there in 1958 or thereabouts although the actual confirmation took place at All Saints Shard End The clergy were Dennis Ede & Peter Heaps.

    Tram tracks in Edmund Street

Used to walk past them in the 90s on my way to work at Louisa Ryland House.

I caught the reading bug here. Regular Saturday afternoon haunt when visiting my grandparents in Monk Road.

    'Orse Road

My Gran (who we lived with when I was small) always warned me about playing in the 'orse road. She also referred to a pencil as a "black lead"

    Rackhams Store

Just come across this thread. Mum used to work at Rackhams at Christmas during the 60s. As far as the phrase about the "back of Rackhams" my understanding was that as the night service buses terminated there it was considered a lucrative spot for the "ladies of the night" to ply their trade...

    Hand. Elusive Aunt & Uncle.

Sorry about that. It's John Joseph.....both father & son. In fact, the names & father's occupation makes me wonder whether they were Irish. Don't know if Hand is an Irish surname.

    Hand. Elusive Aunt & Uncle.

We have the marriage cert, which gives her name as Nellie. Have heard a rumour that she was actually Helena Mary, but have no proof as Grandad never had his older children baptised, although my mother who was his daughter to a second marriage, was baptised. The marriage cert in 1938 gives John...

    Hand. Elusive Aunt & Uncle.

Thanks everyone for looking. They are a very elusive pair. A cousin remembers visiting them when she was a child in the early 50s & is sure there were a couple of children, but it's a long time ago & she can't remember details. As far as I am aware, the Freemans are not related unless they are...

    Hand. Elusive Aunt & Uncle.

looking for info about John Joseph Hand & his wife Nellie nee Norman who married in 1938 in Birmingham. I know nothing at all about John Joseph. Nellie was born in Bradford in 1908 & they lived in Grosvenor Road Great Barr. I understand that they had at least 2 children & were still at the same...

    Primark

14 years is the record to beat. I'm not only pleased they have lasted so long, but also that I am still the same size.!!

    Heathfield Road Handsworth

Yes, I realise it is a medical condition, but it seems unlikely that my aunt would broadcast to the world that her child had the condition. Knowing the Brummie propensity for malapropisms (my gran was a past master at getting the wrong word) I think that's the most likely explanation & I am very...

Good suggestion, haemophilia. I have a friend who always refers to her "hystericalectomy", so not impossible.

    Heathfield Road Handsworth

Thanks. I am aware that it's not unusual for father & son to have the same forenames. Have just heard from my cousin who visited my aunt when she was terminally ill. She tells me that our aunt told her mother that one of the children was a "hermaphrodite" to quote our aunts' own words. We are...

Harrison Barrow Grammar School Hartfield Crescent County School

Funny. Although I went to school there, I never connected the name Barrow with the Barrows stores which were a favourite haunt of my mother & grandmother on their shopping expeditions into "town".

    Heathfield Road Handsworth

Thanks for that both of you. I suspect this chap was a bit of a "Jack the lad" He gave his father's occupation as a shepherd. Either he was lying or his father lived in a rural area & had the same Christian names as my chap. Can't get any lead on him at all. He appears to have been born in 1901...

    Heathfield Road Handsworth

A relative gives his address on his marriage cert in 1938 as 77 Heathfield Rd, Handsworth. As far as I can see from the electoral registers there was no residential accommodation between numbers 69 & 77 for the whole of the 1930s at least. Can anyone tell me what was there please. Presumably...

    Primark

Sorry to disagree. During 2004 I bought 2 pairs of denim jeans for 6 pounds per pair from Primark. They came with me when I retired in 2005 & I am still wearing them. Like me, they are now past their best, but they were a real bargain.

    William Street City Centre

I lived in one of the flats owned by Trident Housing Association from 1996 until I retired from work in 2005. For me it was ideal, within walking distance of my work in Newhall St. Have happy memories of walking down Broad St, through Centenary Square & Paradise Forum, Probably totally...

    Norman Nellie B Bradford 1908

The family story is that she was employed by the Cadbury family, but whether in the factory or as a domestic I have no idea. If she was part of the domestic staff, would she have appeared on the ER at their address.
