    He enlisted 10th Jan 1916. his medal card says he got the Victory Medal and the British Medal. on his card he is shown as J Yates. Barrie.

    On the absent voters list there is a John Yates of House 7 Court 59 New John St West. 46017 Pte 10th Essex Regt. He is on the 1918 and 1919 voters lists. Barrie.

    Purely out of interest I had a look for him on the 1861 census with his wife Elizabeth, he is born Bristol and his wife is born London. His trade is given as Seal Engraver and Publican, and the address is The Ivy Tavern, 110 Bloomsbury. By the 1871 census he is just shown as a seal engraver...

    Yes indeed Eric, we had one of those radios. It had a large 12v battery, a smaller battery called a Grid Bias, don't recall the voltage of that, and the infamous accumulator, filled with battery acid, that had to be exchanged at regular intervals. Ours was exchanged at a place on Hockley...

    They are on the 1861 census in Birmingham. The fathers name is William and the mothers name is Ann. Also on the census are Mary Ann 12. William 9. Robert 7. John 5. Elizabeth 2. Hope this helps. Barrie

    As you probably already know, there is a John Coates on the 1861 census with the father William and the mother Ann, William born B'Ham and Ann born Scotland. If you could give the names of any siblings, he could be pinned down on the census. Barrie
