    Aston Manor Transport Museum

Yes Lyn, your son is right about that, it would involve rejigging the layout so that the museum is lengthways along the building rather than across the middle of it. This would involve another tenant moving out (they were due to do so). I'm not fully sure what has gone wrong yet but we were all...

    Aston Manor Transport Museum

I'm very sad to report that the museum has run into very severe problems at its new location in Aldridge and now has no security of tenure on the site and a fading possibility of opening there as a proper museum. The directors are trying to resolve the situation and we should know the outcome in...

Book: Birmingham Buses Route by Route 1925-1975

I finally got my copy of this last weekend. It covers the history of the bus services then explores each route and the buses that served on them starting from 1 upwards. Lots of photos both colour and black and white from all around the city. While it concentrates mainly on Birmingham CT it also...

    Dollman Street Stores Discussion Here

A wonderful collection such as this really deserves to be on public view all year round rather than just a few open days, i'm sure the photos are just a taste of all the other fine exhibits that can be seen. Is there any plans on the horizon to have them permanently displayed? A real shame if...

    New Street Station From 1854 - 1966

That "wagon train" in photo 2 is really interesting, the leading "vehicle" is obviously battery electric operated with a platform for the driver and a tiller to steer. As it's carrying number 9 it's probably safe to assume there were at least 8 others. It would be interesting to know more of its...

The former Lea Hall Bus Garage

That's going to have a few of us including me comparing photos of Quinton and Lea Hall:courage:

    Games We Used To Play

Bulldog could certainly get very rough. A similar game was "Spider" which would start out the same way but each person caught linked arms to form a web to catch the others one by one, again fairly rough at times!! Another one where we risked life and limb was "Murder in the dark" which had to be...

    Birmingham in 1950s

Granddad was a master are finding secondary uses for things. The interior doors in their house came from old telephone kiosks, not that you could tell. An old bench seat from a lorry was converted into a sofa, I still have it today. The bathroom door handle was off a car of some kind and his...

    Birmingham in 1950s

Its still an attitude I adopt to this day, if there is something without value lying about that can be put to good use then I use it. I will retrieve good timber from skips that are near the house and make use of them, people throw perfectly good things away. Last summer the school behind me got...

    Canals of Birmingham

One of the things I enjoy most about Birmingham is the canals. I haven't got to explore that much of the network so far but it is just so pretty and peaceful to walk along by the water in the middle of a large city and watch the colourful narrow-boats going by. So much more enjoyable that having...

    Electric Trams

I visited here last year. The tracks in the foreground are still there with plenty of weeds around them! At the time I was trying to work out where that magnificent shelter was, this photo makes it clear in my mind now.

    Aston Manor Transport Museum

More recently I have heard that the tram tracks & stone set floor are included in the listing which is brilliant as it will prevent any new user from removing them or concreting them over. From the point of view of attracting a new tenant this will of course restrict the use of the interior...

    Aston Manor Transport Museum

Yes it's good news Lyn. It's highly unlikely the transport museum will move back there given their experiences with the City Council so I hope the building finds an appropriate use. Simon

    Aston Manor Transport Museum

I have just heard this morning that Witton Tram Shed has been given a grade 2 listing, only came through this week. It is very good news for this important building and will hopefully prevent it being ruined in any way. The canal barge has moved recently too but i'm not sure where to. Another...

    Midland Red Early Days

The "Midland Red Style" is a great book, got it on my last trip over from Ian Allan in Ethel St. Mention of Tenbury Wells above reminds me of my Great Grandfather who was from there. Yet another place I have to visit some time. Is there a bus service there from Brum these days?

    Bus Tokens

I bought some recently on Ebay, some have Birmingham Corporation Tramways on them while others (presumably newer) have Birmingham City Transport on them. Up to now I had wondered as to their exact use, it was obviously a way of ensuring that they could only be redeemed for a bus or tram fare...

    Island House Eastside

I'm stunned and saddened that this is still happening in 2012. Development and money come before history and heritage once again......

    Lickey Hills

Hi Stitcher, all those wooden steps are still very much there, gave me a good workout on my visit last year! Simon

    Harborne

Sounds right to me Paul. Buses had them on the edges of the front wings/mudguards at the time. Headlights had an attachment fitted to only release a very small amount of light.

Where There Were Brand New Trams and Brand New Buses

I suppose we should be grateful that it hasn't been demolished like most of the others.
