    No 12 BUS ROUTE

The problem is that while it looks like Oakworth there in nowhere in Birmingham of that name or even close to it and I can't find any reference that there ever was. I haven't tried to sharpen the image but the way the letters are blurred into one another it could quite easily be California as we...

    No 12 BUS ROUTE

California would be the logical thing for it to read but I agree that it seems to end in "worth". First part I can't make out at all....

    Items that have faded away

It may well have originated in London but the term was used widely including here in Dublin. Quite possibly it didn't get used in Birmingham at all.

    Birmingham Buses Part 2

Great photos again Ragga. The first one looks like it was taken from a height maybe from the Town Hall. Such a completely different scene from today with BCT "standards" heading up New Street and the now demolished Galloway's Corner still open for business. Simon

    Items that have faded away

The latter were always known unofficially as "Clippees", fond memories of a few myself: Simon

    Co-op Dairies In The 40's

Its over 20 years now since glass milk bottles vanished from Dublin, I have a selection plus a couple of crates set aside for posterity. Its a shame the way they don't re-use bottles any more. I remember piles of drink bottles outside the back door that we would let build up then bring them down...

    New Birmingham library plans

My first impression of it was that it was like a pile of parcels stacked on top of one another like what you would put under your Christmas tree! The parcels look pretty fancy now but I still get the same image in my mind. I work in a 300 year old library building in Dublin so there is a bit of...

    Aston Manor Transport Museum

Yes sadly there will be no return to Witton. At the moment museum directors are contacting various councils in the West Midlands to see if there are suitable vacant properties about and importantly properties that can be registered for museum use. Contact is also being made with other museums...

    Wreath rack

I'm another person who likes to explore old graveyards but again this mortsafe is a new one on me. The sides must have been deep in the ground otherwise the body snatchers could have levered in up out of the freshly dug soil, it might even be weighed down with stones to keep it secure. In Dublin...

Moseley Rd Baths Behind The Scenes

A great opportunity to see this beautiful building but sadly I won't be over at that time, hopefully will get a look sometime in the future. I hope the lottery funding is granted to this very deserving project. I've only seen photos of the baths but that's enough to tell me how much of a gem...

    Items that have faded away

If you mention antimacasser nowadays the majority of people don't know what you mean!! The ones used on coach seats went by the same name and are still used by some coach firms often called headrest covers..... Simon

    Birmingham Buses Part 2

2847 was almost certainly the most accident prone bus in the fleet being involved in quite a number of minor and a few major mishaps. It will be great to see it eventually emerge restored.

    The Jewellery Quarter

I have never managed to visit the Jewellery Quarter, it was on my list when I was over the last time but I just couldn't get around to it. Next time hopefully! We have a book here in the library which has fabulous photos of it so i can plan my tour a bit..... Simon

    Tyburn Road Bus Works

Thanks for those great photos aston lad. Lots of different types of bus there, Fleetlines, Metrobus, Nationals and an Ailsa. Also notice a "standard" down the back which is interesting, possibly Daimler 3225. I agree Frothblower about the posterity photos. Simon

    Aston Manor Transport Museum

At the moment everybody is looking out for suitable disused buildings. One thing that is vital is that it is capable of having its use changed to museum use otherwise it can't be opened to the public or apply for grants, these two things are absolutely essential. As several people have said...

    Aston Manor Transport Museum

Just as we had feared the worst has now happened and the museum is now homeless again. I don't know the full details and even if I did I have been told it would be unwise to put them anywhere on line. A lease was offered and this was followed up very quickly by an eviction order (trying to work...

    Geoffrey Hughes

Yes indeed I was also saddened to hear of his passing. My childhood memories of him as binman Eddie Yeats in Cornation Street are still clear in my mind, he was a great double act with Bernard Youens who played Stan Ogden. His character of Onslow in Keeping up Appearances will remain famous as...

    BHF,s SUMMER MEET UP

Sadly I can't make it over in August but someday (hopefully soon) I will be able to make one of the "meet ups" Knowing a bit about book conservation, Black's Guide to Warwickshire looks in good order. Loose pages are very easily repaired, our conservation department here would regard it as a...
