    Lyn, Maurice thanks for that.

Why Are Streets Named After People?

I've just googled the name, (don't know why I didn't think of that before !). Louise was one of Queen Victoria's daughters.

Why Are Streets Named After People?

The same could be said about the old Druids Lane prefab estate Lyn. The roads there were named after towns in Wiltshire, (Larkhill, Shrewton, etc.).

Why Are Streets Named After People?

When I was an errand kid, working for the Co-op I used to deliver to a house in Louise Lorne Road, off Moseley Rd. I always thought it was a lovely name and often wondered who she was.

    Group photos

I love this picture. My Mother was born in Jan 1917 and this photo shows me how she would have dressed, when she was about the same age as some of those kids.

    Irving Street

I checked with my Mother today, I'd got it wrong in post #10, she lived at No 73 Irving St, back in the 1920s. (Mom's 101 now and her memory's not so good). She remembers a fight in the Dolphin, that spilled out into the street and the landlady holding a big bunch of keys like a dagger and...

    Kings Heath Horse Showground

I remember seeing the Dog Track from the top of the bus, as a child. There was a bus terminus in that area too, which I allways thought was originally to take tram passengers from The Nob on to the Maypole. I hope someone can put me right on that.

The Birmingham Pals in the Great War

Clearly a band of the Warwicks in the foreground. Further back there a lot of men with what looks like the cap badge of the Engineers and they must be in a Mounted role, judging by their bandoliers . I can't be sure if the rifles that can be seen are SMLEs, the bayonets seem a trifle short...

    Comics Part 2

Browsing through this thread I had a flashback. On the back page of the Wizard there was allways a jolly old feature to rouse patriotic fervour among the young readers. Anyroad. In the early 60s my regiment shared a barracks with the 10th Hussars. We noticed a bloke walking about the camp...

I liked them too but once I sucked too hard and the sherbert went down my throat. Not recommended !

    Sweets We Used To Have

When I Was in Paderborn we had a bloke who smoked this stuff, a bitch to light apparently.

    Sweets We Used To Have

I remember those Imps too, horrible little things. Viv, What you describe sounds like Coltsfoot Rock. I suspect it was liquorice related. For what it's worth, I liked it. Bob, I could've done with Troach drops this week. I've been barking like a dog all week and none of the modern remedies...

    Staffordshire Regiment

A very good point Janice ! I wasn't happy about those medals either. Normal practise is to leave them in a drawer until needed, not leave them pinned on the jacket.

    Staffordshire Regiment

I've had a "dig around" but can find little else that I can add. I'm still inclined to think this is a Territorial Officer and from a Battalion of the S STAFFS. One thing I did notice though, it looks like the jacket was originally made for a 2nd Lieutenant (one "pip") and a second, rather tatty...

Memories : Essence Of The 50s And 60s

My childhood at home was OK, my upbringing was a bit strict but there was no harm in that. The trouble with my bit of the 50s was that my schoolteachers were allowed to batter us kids to their heart's content. Some of them should have been jailed for their cruelty but it's too late for that now...

    Staffordshire Regiment

That looks like a Mess Dress jacket, owned by a Lieutenant and I'm inclined to think he was in the South Staffordshire Regiment. (the N.STAFFS had the Prince of Wales' feathers above the Staffordshire knot). It's doubtful that there will be any information to be got from the medals, they are...

    Army & R A F Recruiting Offices

That's where I joined up in '57. If that lot had been there on the day I think I'd've done a smart about turn and gone home to Mommy !

    Air raid shelters

There was one of these shelters in our area recently. It was decided that it was for Home Guard sentries.

    Wrensons, Geo Masons or Badgerys

Oh that bacon slicer. There was one of those in the Co-op where I worked as a Bacon Hand in the 50s, I still have the scar ! That gadget on the top was a sharpening device.
