    Rhodes of Shropshire

Thanks Alberta - that is teriffic! I was disappointed that Noah did not appear on the census, but I would not have thought of Rolades as an option. Yes, this information tallies with my existing research. It would appear he did not hang around in remarrying!

    Rhodes of Shropshire

Hi, Not Birmingham, but I am delving into my maternal grandmother's family now. They lived in Shropshire in the 1800s. I know that her grandfather was William Rhodes and that his father was Noah Rhodes, who was born around 1816 (no relation to another Noah Rhodes married to Mary). I think he...

    Ankcorn

Hi, My wife's family this time. I have got as far back as 1800 to George Ankcorn (father of Samuel of Salter Street) who was born in Haselor Warwickshire. But I wonder whether anyone has got back further. There is a family belief that the name is Dutch (maybe because it sounds that way!)...

    Finnemore

Hi, Looking for any information on the Finnemore family in the early 1800s. My ancestor Joseph Moseley married Ann Finnemore in the 1830s in Edgbaston. Her mother was Eliza. Trade directories suggest the finnemores in Edgbaston were clock dial makers. Information may provide clue as to my...

    Canadian BMD records

Topsy, Marvellous - this is fascinating. Could I trouble you to tell me what records you are referring to for Emma Moseley's visit to Alice when aged 70. You say arriving from Detroit, Michigan. This would be an internal journey then and not arrival by ship. I only ask because Emma Moseley...

    Christensen

Maurice, I have obtained the passenger records on SS Southwark from Collectionscanada and Anton Christensen is recorded on that as a carpenter - which does fit! So many thanks for the lead. I only have one passenger record left to find and that is for Henry Cole who would have travelled to...

    Christensen

Yes, it occurred to me that he may not have revealed his true occupation! The 1907 listing looks promising on that basis. I have a copy of the 1909 passenger list - they were clearly Swedish and arrived in the UK from Harwich on route to Montreal - way off beam.

    Christensen

Thanks! Yes, Shera that is the Emma Moseley I am interested in and the 1901 information is new to me so thanks. Sospiri - hard to tell. It could be - the ages are about right, but the occupation is not. There are a few blind alleys. I thought it would be easy with these names, but you have...

    Canadian BMD records

Kath, Thanks for the offer. I know that one family (Henry Cole, Alice Cole and Kitty Cole) emigrated to Southampton, Ontario (Bruce County I think) in about 1912. In 1914, Emma Moseley (Alice's mother) and Ivy Moseley were on a ship bound for Montreal and therefore may also have ended up...

    Canadian BMD records

Hi, [All my grandfather's aunts and uncle emigrated to Ontario, Canada in the early part of the 20th century from their homes in Northfield. According to my father, contact with them slowly fell away after the second world war. As this is a significant chunk of my male line I am keen to...

    Christensen

Hi, Looking for any information on an Anton and Emma (nee Moseley) Christensen who lived at 6 Mill Lane, Northfield in around 1905. They do not appear on the 1911 Census and it is thought they emimgrated to Canada/USA, although no record of this on online passenger lists. Anton was a...

    Emmigration to Canada/Canadian immigration records

Hi, I have discovered that my great great grandmother and two of her daughters and their husbands emmigrated to Canada between 1909 and 1915. At least one daughter ended up in Southampton, Bruce County, Ontaria. Does anyone know what the attraction was with Canada for working class brummies...

    Ankcorn

Ankcorn is my wife's maiden name and I am trying to establish a link to the Anckorn's of Haselor in Warwickshire. I have established that her great great great grandfather Samuel Ankcorn lived in Salter Street, Solihull and was the son of George Ankcorn, a labourer. According to the IGG there...

Any ideas what a hook rim and clasp maker would have done in the 1880s?

    Engine turner

Any idea what an engine turner and engine erector did? This is a description from the 1861 census. Possibly associated with the railways, because the family moved around Birmingham, Swindon and London. Thanks
