Hi Baz, The barrel was gauged for size and it fell into the size of GO and NO GO there is a limit between the two sizes, which escapes me after all this time, there are many checks which were done, sometimes the parts are too good a fit such as the depth of the bolt head which can leak...

Hi lads, I'm back with a few stories, it seems the site has gone dead. "What happened"? Don't tell me, broken fingers !!!!! A little story about having to eat your own words. The recruits at Devises comprised a few of the A.E.C lads who did their training with the Wilts and after passing out...

    Fire Brigade Information

Carolina, That film takes me back to the stories my Gramp used to tell me about the problems with the fire engine at Bartley green, he was the fire chief of the area and the lanes were very rough with pot holes, on one or two occasions the support bar which the ladder rests on broke...

Playing football for the Wilts Depot meant that a lot of the lads came from the Wilts, devon, Dorset and hampshire areas and they did not seem to make it into the football league. I played in one match against the pay corps just up the road from the Wilts Depot and they had the pick of the whole...

Paul, you have been a busy bee, I reckon you have been reading up on this. All the info I have of all the 15 odd we were trained on in 24 weeks contained a lot of what you are talking about, how the Vickers was used during WW! on the aircraft and also the Lewis gun. A lot of the info was not...

Paul, I read many years ago about in WW1 two Vickers were mounted on the battlefield set up to cross fire and they kept a whole battalion of infantry at bay. You spoke of me having a good memory, that is quite true, my Sister who is 7 years older than I will remark about something from childhood...

Paul, the Gimpy as you call it was not in existence when I was serving, it took over from the Vickers in the late sixties I think, one of the Vickers problems was I took too many soldiers to operate it although just me and my G.D lad managed on the small range. Noisy thing with the crank...

Baz, you write them and I will read them, different little stories jog the memory, on the one about the exercise on the Plains another thing happened. As I said the Sgt was a bit thick, after we had determined where the enemy was we dug in outside the woods all around and made sure we could not...

Hi ,lads, ok I hope. I will tell you a funny story which happened on an exercise on Salisbury Plains right at the end of my service. We were 15 strong permanent Staff consisting of a Sgt and one cpl and one lance jack. We were taken in a closed TCV across the plains to a clump of trees forming...

Phil, I was going to look at that picture of the German aircraft in more detail, I saw it on the N/S site but it has gone. I know I'm a bit thick at times but what is the Copper mine host, I'm not fully into this jargon. Dave

    Exhibition, Hall of Memory 1945-46

Phil, I am not sure but I do not think that scene is at the side of the Hall of Memory, if you remember there was a street there alongside Bingley Hall. Looking at the photo there are cars parked at a higher level than the main picture, I don't know to be honest!! I cannot find this site only...

    Exhibition, Hall of Memory 1945-46

Phil, nice try, you said near the end of the war, were we still under blackout I think, the the searchlight was on and I do not remember German planes on the site. Maybe V.E day had passed and we were waiting for the Japanese to give up. Thanks anyway, "Where did you find the picture"? I do wish...

    Exhibition, Hall of Memory 1945-46

Does anybody remember the display at the side of the Hall of memory roughly around these dates?. There was maybe two aircraft a Search light scanning the sky and various other things on display, the whole area was fenced off with Police guarding it.

I have looked on the net tonight and I cannot find anything relating to the display. My old friend Len Copsey would have known where to look. Dave

Paul, I went inside the fuselage and looked up front and then to tail. Baz I think you are right it could have been a Wellington. Dave

Baz, it must have been a bomber as I remember climbing up some steps to look inside, it was possibly brought in bits and assembled on site, if it had been a fighter I would have had to climb higher and look down at the controls. I did not see your previous post relating to this, there were other...

Paul, I did see some funny and dangerous things happen. You remarked about the Mortar smoke bomb going off when I was on our 30 yd range, the assault course for the pay corp ran alongside our 30 yarder and it was fired before the recruits started on the assault but between us was a very thick...

oldMohawk, what a cushy time you had, read my post #318 and see what a rubbish camp Barton Stacey was in Hants where I spent six weeks training. Today it would not be tolerated, Mothers would be onto their M.P's complaining, we thought this was the norm until we were posted to other camps, we...

Never seen the photo, Paul, little bit before my time as well. Do you remember me talking about the first Belgian F.N's which I liked very much because of the lack of recoil, well I decided to have a go with one a couple of days after they were delivered. I got the general duties lad to put up...

The B.A.T. as it was known(battalion anti tank) was probably the for-runner of the WOMBAT because it also could not be used in wooded areas or on sand, Calibre 3.5 inches 75-100yds lethal area behind, gave your position away as soon as it was fired and elevation could not be increased much as...
