The new Bus Station that never was.

I seem to remember this was the site of the planned bus station that never was. The entrance would have been where the cars are parked in this street view of 2008.

removal of tram lines selly oak

It looks likely that the picture was taken from the railway bridge on the Bristol Road at the junction of Heeley Road. You can see the university clock tower in the upper left hand of this street view.

    Monument Road

Lyn, the picture in your post #45 is more likely to be the corner of Hyde Rd and Monument Road than Reservoir Road. Possibly even could be the corner of Oliver Road? I think the church, St. Johns, is too close for it to be Reservoir Road and I think Alston Street going off to the right would be...

    Hams Hall Power Station.

Hi Ray, the article was in the July 1945 edition of the Meccano magazine and it states a construction period of 18 months so presume the chimney was completed in the late 1940's. The article does state 'to be built' so I wonder if the lift was ever included in the final build. Surely the lift...

    Hams Hall Power Station.

I came across a interesting article in the July 1945 issue of The Meccano Magazine referring to a new chimney at Hams Hall power station. The article refers to a lift inside the chimney. I wonder if the lift was just for construction or if it was intended for future maintenance. I bet a few...

    Then & Now

I think they maybe "Bill Posting" advertisements on a traffic lights control box with a bucket of paste on the pavement. and Don't forget the old one about "Bill Posters will be prosecuted." That chap Bill must have spent a lot of time in Court!

    Early Radio

Yes Dave, I have also spent many hours browsing the World Radio History site too. It is a true dedication these guys have who manage this site and credit must go to them for their time, effort and money they put in to it. Many hours I have spent looking at the electronics magazines and books...

    Early Radio

I have posted this link to a excellent Radio History site containing a goldmine of information in a previous thread not exactly related to Radio and thought it may be a good idea to post it here as a reminder. Its really worth a visit, its more than just radio with fantastic content that also...

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

The buildings were never designed for residential use. The were built as offices, one was used by a computer supply company and the others by legal and estate agents. I think they were designed to look like houses in keeping with the cottages across the junction of Nursery Road and the original...

Janice I am sure it was Hughley's, previously Vicker's bakery. The full story of the history of the bakers here... https://www.mawddachdreams.co.uk/about-me-my-home/my-family/41-the-shop.html It states under the WW2 section of that link that Vicker's was taken over by Hughley's. I knew the...

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

The pub is called just "The Plough". The small car park / loading bay in the foreground belongs to the old bakery which can be seen to the right of the photo. If memory serves correct I think it was "Hughleys bakers". For a time after the bakery closed down it was used as a car storage and...

Another edit this time showing Elizabeth Fry House and Collett House viewed from Ladywood Middleway. Their location was opposite Ladywood Police Station and Ladywood Social Club. Both blocks of maisonettes have now been demolished and replaced with new housing.

I have added some street names to the original picture to help pinpoint its location, hard to recognise the old area from the mass demolition that has taken place. I hope this helps.

I think the aerial photo in post 1071 is of the Holloway Head area. The lorry marked with what looks to be "CN"? on the side parked on Holloway Head itself near the junction of Marshall St.
