    Items that have faded away

I remember those "doughnuts" we used to put our hair through and then pin them up for a chignon. Thought we were so sophisticated.

    british lion..newtown row

Thanks for re-posting some of the photos Lyn, they do re-kindle so many memories - BTW the garage was owned by Norman Lock, who later opened Newtown Garages on the corner of New John Street and Summer Lane, when the area was re-developed, my son had a part time job with him for a couple of hours...

Lyn, you are right the Barbers was Ray's first shop, opened about 1955/56. Patty worked for Ray some years later in the mid 70s I think, when he had a joint Ladies/Gents shop next to Sainsburys in the Newtown Shopping Centre. I have at long last found the photos of that shop and hope to get...

    Joseph Norris photographer

Hi LCMor, I am not too sure whether he is a g.g. grandson or a g.g.g. grandson, but we were talking about family history some months ago and he told me of this connection. I will ring him and if he is interested I will send you his contact details by IM on the forum.

    Castle Bromwich Hall

Ray and I were there at about the same time, but as I posted in General Discussion (sorry wrong thread) we didn't want a tour of the gardens as it was raining so we just went round to the Hall and asked if we could pay there for the guided tour, a very nice young man named Chris, said he would...

    NEWMAN FAMILY PADDINGTON ST

Poppy, I haven't any real information on Fanny, I don't know whether that is her official name or whether it is like Emily or Emma being called Pemmie. I just have a feeling she is a cousin of my mother and could be the daughter of one of my gran's sisters. Family name Yates some of my great...

    Items that have faded away

We always had bolsters on the bed when I was growing up. When I got married in 1957 I had a few presents of pillowcase sets with embroidered pillowslips and a plain bolster case. We didn't have a bolster so I cut the bolster cases into two to make pillowslips. Make do and mend in those days.

    NEWMAN FAMILY PADDINGTON ST

That's a lovely photo Poppy it looks as though it is all the male guests at a wedding as they are all wearing flowers in their buttonholes. Have you any information on Fanny Goodenough, I don't know whether that is her birth name or her married name. The name Goodenough rang a bell, as it is...

    NEWMAN FAMILY PADDINGTON ST

Poppy have you any further information on the Goodenough family. My mother used to mention a Fanny Goodenough, who I believe was her cousin, most of my ancestors on that side lived around the Summer Lane area. Mom was born 1900 so I imagine Fanny was about the same age.

Does anyone remember Fablon, used to cover worktops in the kitchen. We lived in rooms when we got married in 1957 and painted the units white and had red Fablon on the tops. I thought I was ultra modern at the time!!!!

Aberfan Disaster 1966 Pantglas Junior School

I was a mother of a young son aged 6 at the time, it was heartbreaking and still is, almost a whole generation of the village children lost. I think the whole country was glued to the TV watching the desperate efforts of the emergency services doing their utmost to rescue the children and...

    Aston Bookies & Pubs

Hi Arty, what a coincidence that you are June's son. I didn't live in Inkerman Street, but used to take my dad's bets and collect his occasional winnings from George Davies. I lived in Copeley Street a cul-de-sac leading off Burlington Street, and remember the teachers your mother mentioned...

    Dance halls

Yes Brenda, my dad was very strict too, he would often wait on the corner with his arms folded for me to get home, no canoodling in the entry when he was on "sentry duty". Mom was more lenient and when he was working on nights, I could get home later, trouble was the dances and parties were...

    Dance halls

Glad to have jogged your memory Ingleton. Quite a walk for you, but it was common for us to walk home after a night out. I did it many times sometimes from Small Heath to Aston, and after dancing or being at a party all night. I often took my high heeled shoes off part way home!!!

    Dance halls

Ingleton, is the place you are thinking of the Morris Commercial Club? It was very popular on the 50s/60s and I think you had to get your tickets on Saturday afternoons to be sure you could get in the dance in the evening.

    Bick / Twittey Alice Beatrice

Re: Alice Beatrice Bick / Twittey Laraine, it could be that Alice went to her mother's home to have the baby, this was often the case with home births at the time.
