    The Nechells Flyer

Hi Laurie_B' From memory (50 years+) There were row's of knife switches (large), the 'knife' had a hole where the hook was engaged, the changeover was achieved with brute strength applied by the operator at the other end of the wooden pole. I remember several poles stacked up against a wall...

    The Nechells Flyer

Hi All, what a small world - my uncle, Syd Hardy was a Turbine Driver at 'A' station. I used to visit on a Sunday in the 50's wooden cooling towers and all. But what I found interesting was the use of a long wooden pole with an insulator and hook at one end used to switch the high tension...

    Automatic Half Barrier Crossings

The box may have been switched out. The need for a box here diminished when the MOD establishment closed. I bet the crossing was made independent so the box could be closed and save a few quid!!

    Automatic Half Barrier Crossings

I agree with you Charlie, Hope any enquiry is not whitewashed. In my case I went along on the Sunday and viewed the operation -no problems - intermittent may be, but there is a failure mode that needs looking at. This accident was fatal, Railtrack should take another look.

    Moor Street Station

:)Hi everyone, just seen on Midlands Today, 1.30pm, a piece on Chiltern Railways filmed at Moor St station (terminus platforms.) The track-work has been lifted from the platforms. Hope this is a good omen - new track-work to be laid ready for connection to the network.

    Moor Street Station

Thanks Ragga, Peter and Neville, That confirms my thoughts that the connections have yet to be made. At one time there was an independant single track that ran from Moor St to Tyseley in parallel with the other running lines for ECS purposes. It would be nice if any Railtrack person out there...

    Moor Street Station

Thanks Phil and Mike, I was referring to the terminus platforms. Some ten years ago I read a statement that Railtrack would complete this work by the end of the decade!! I live far away, and cannot check for myself.

Thanks Mike, I do rember the Sunday diversions, we walked down Aston Church Road to 'Grassy Banks' usually about 10 ish and watched the signal man (Washwood Heath box) switch in, then the down peg would be pulled off for the first down - a parcels usually a jube or scot. Then a long wait till...

Thank you Neville, I used to live right by the Aston Stechford line (Grassy Banks) - on Sundays we had many diversions off the Trent Valley. I saw many Clans and Brits over the years. I just think you were dead unlucky in not seeing one. Thanks for your reply.
