James Hardy - Canadian Pacific Railways 1906

Hi, My great, great Uncle emigrated to Canada in 1906 and worked on the railway as a fire man. Can somebody advise how to obtain his record. I believe his early days were in Ontario. Thank you for any advice. Mike.

New Street Station (phased redevelopment completed 2015)

I had no idea there was a 'local train' connecting New St to Moor St - which route does that take? I wonder if the new tram extension goes to Moor St? Mike.

    Strategic Steam reserve...

Hi, I quote this comment as seen. "Aren't the sidings being kept in case they are needed for commissioning locomotives from the strategic steam reserve which is stored nearby under Box Hill?" Is this fact myth? I know some years ago this was discussed as it was rumoured Patriot class...

    Tamworth field trainspotting

It would be great if one of the mags. could run an article 'Steam Days at Tamworth' I think there is enough info out there to do this. I never had any problems at New St, Snow Hill or the Tamworth Field. Only got moved on at Rugby by the GC bridge.

    Curzon Street Railway Station

Surely there must be a (none passenger) link between HS1 and HS2 for stock transfers etc. I cannot believe HS2 will be 'totally' isolated or do I detect common sense does not exist in these matters? Mike.

    Curzon Street Railway Station

And It will not be linked to HS1. A few heads in the sand I think!!! Mike.

Sutton Coldfield to Stirling Motorail Car Sleeper

Being close to Aston shed 3D, visiting (bunking) often and remember the brits. arriving in the early 60's most were ex GW 'stars' and in a very poor condition and used mainly on pick-up freights. I witnessed many on the Aston- Stechford line pulling a few trucks, what a climb-down from the...

    Tamworth field trainspotting

I remember Rugby spot too. Had relatives around the corner at Hunter St spent many hours there in the 50's. As far as I know it was the only place where you could spot 3 regions - London Midland, Eastern and Western. The western was usually in the form of a 'Hall' on the York- Bournemouth...

    Tamworth field trainspotting

    Tamworth field trainspotting

Hi Perry, I used the same train but got on and off at Saltley Station. Some years ago I suggested to the editor of 'Steam Days' that they should Commission an article about the Tamworth Field in the 50's even suggested the title 'Steam Days at Tamworth' nothing materialised. Mike.

Hi Anvil, I notice you coped quite a few Scottish jubes in 1948. I started in 1953 and never saw many Scottish jubes or semis at Tamworth LL, just a couple of Scottish jubes on the high level. Mike.

The City of Birmingham - 46235

I heard the same story re 46235 City of Birmingham getting stuck in the tunnel whilst attempting to visit New Street Station from Proof House Junction for the centenary celebrations. I believe the chimney got damaged and also the lining of the tunnel. There was no problem with clearances from...

The City of Birmingham - 46235

These monsters of yester-rail were not designed to be 'static' exhibits moving a few feet on command in an exhibition hall but to live in steam. It is perfectly possible for 46235 to be restored to working order as per BR condition and be based in the City (Tyseley) for people to visit and run...

The City of Birmingham - 46235

Thanks Janice and Colin, I have learned something - I always thought the reason for not seeing at New St was the height of the tunnels just outside the station and this remained so until the tunnels were opened out to take the catinery for the electrification. Mike.

The City of Birmingham - 46235

Thanks pjmburns, It used to be in the Science Museum annex specially built to house the loco, but I thought this closed some years ago. Mike.

Hi All, What is the latest on the 'semi' I have heard rumour it could be brought back to life. What do you think? Where is the loco now? Mike.

    Moor Street Station

Yes a much 'moor' civilised station than the 'new' New Street station. I wonder when they will re-lay the track to the vacant platform side? There was some talk about diverting some of the Derby/Gloucester traffic on to this platform via the Midland Camp Hill line. Mike.

Re-open LSWR main line from Plymouth to Exeter

Hi All, We have all seen the devastation of the main line from Exeter to Plymouth at Dawlish which will take months to repair thus cutting off Plymouth and Cornwall from Rail. The old LSWR (SR) main line is still largely intact with just a short section from Bere Alston to Meldon removed...
