    Pype Hayes Park pond renovation

Went for a stroll in Pype Hayes park at the weekend - the colours on the trees at this time of year are real treat for the eyes and the bonfire is under construction ready for Guy Fawkes night . Wandered down to the pond which I knew had been drained and cordoned off for a while now. The banks...

The Ben Johnson King Edward Inn

How right you are Astonian - indeed, the 'upstairs' of the Ben Johnson was part of the Press Club - I worked right next door for several years in Aston Cross telephone exchange, above the Job centre. :)

The Ben Johnson King Edward Inn

Originally called the King Edward Inn when it was first built - if you look just under the dome and above the clock on the tower it is still there to see.

    Barretts ( Barratts ? ) Jewellery Quarter

Thanks Mike - that's brilliant - gives me something to go at. My Grandfather retired around 1970 after working there for 40+ years - we're not sure whether his 'service' was at just the one firm though. My memories of him are sketchy as he died just as I was becoming a teenager. My aunt is now...

    Brunswick Club, 464 Moseley Road

No that's great Phil - didn't realise it was going that long, it was a going concern back in the late 1920's, which is where I was looking from. Another one of my list of places to investigate. Thank you. Ian

    Barretts ( Barratts ? ) Jewellery Quarter

Had a thoroughly good time ambling around the jewellery quarter on Saturday ( the company helped ) . Anyway, was telling the folks how good it was and discovered that my Grandfather worked there for 40 + years - believed to be for a company/factory called Barretts or Barratts. Has anyone heard...

    Haunted pubs.

The Lad in the Lane ( or Green Man depending on your age) on Bromford Lane is reputed to be haunted and been investigated several times. Some details can be found here : https://www.birminghamghosts.webeden.co.uk/#/ladinthelaneerd/4524409235 Incidentally - outside of ecclesiastical sites it...

    Ossy Osbourne

How about from the world of sport - Nigel Mansell ? Grew up in Brum although I believe he was born down Worcester way and came to Birmingham as a babe in arms ( maybe wrong ).

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

I went there too - if memory serves - in the late 1970's early 1980's, used to hang out in the Bali Hai - the ballroom at the rear of the club. I remember it became the Powerhouse but not exactly sure when.

    Birmingham - my sentimental journey

Peter , I was at the PHS/FOFB get together at the Bartons Arms, I wish we'd have had a chance to chat. I run the FOFB website and rather than go downstairs to eat, stayed upstairs in the Boardroom chatting with some of the others. Had a nice chat with Steve Wilson who was up from London for the...

    Bartons Arms next Saturday, 24.02.2007

For those who are reading but wondering what the AOFB is / was, here's a newspaper article from the Charleston Daily of 30th December 1928, it goes quite a way to explain what it was all about. The clipping is available in a higher resolution and I'm willing to e-mail out - I've had to...
