    One I'd Done

My mother-in-law had us all in stitches the other evening talking about a pub she used to frequent I think in Hingeston Street called the One I'd Done. We all doubted that such a pub ever existed. After much laughter and taking the mickey we phoned my father-in-law to ask him if indeed this...

Lozells Road, Shops, Pubs, Businesses etc

Hi yes I still follow this forum with interest when time allows. You were at T. Elvins a good while before I was there. Think it must have been about 1982 that I started work there as an office junior staying with them for a good 10 years. What a great place to work it was then and I have very...

    Anglesey Street School

I remember a lot of those teachers names. My first teacher was also Miss George. I left Anglesey in 1976. Mr Bellfield was lovely - I remember his morris dancing! I also remember fondly the caretaker Mr. Powell who used to give us sweets at playtime. I lived in Burbury Street.

    Robert Birbeck - Printer

It is indeed amazing. I have a copy of the 1911 census when he lived with his parents at The Mount, Selly Park Road, Selly Park, Birmingham. Unfortunately I do not have any photographs of him at all. His father and my grandfather were cousins and although I lived next door to my grandfather I...

Lozells Road, Shops, Pubs, Businesses etc

Thats right Maxwell - it was. Thanks for that. I think it was on the corner of Barker's Street and Villa Road but I could be wrong. I am pretty certain that Cowdrills was on the corner then a few shops down was a ladies/childrens clothes shops and next to that a hairdressers.

    Lozells

I remember the linen type shop on the corner of Barkers Street and Villa Road and the tobacconists. Think there may have also been a newsagents but may be getting mixed up with the tobacconists. Then there was my Aunty's shop Junior World which used to be the British Gas Showroom. I remember...

Hi Lyn. It is with great sadness that I read this thread. I have not been around much lately and to pop in and hear this sad news - such a shock. You have always been so kind and helpful and I send you and your family my heartfelt condolences. Julie x

    Silly Rhymes.

My nan used to say; If ifs and buts were nuts and bolts we'd all be chewing and cracking. My dad used to sing, whilst carrying me upstairs on his back to bed; Up the wooden hills to bedfordshire Daddy was the old gee gee Patience is a virtue Possess it if you can Seldom Found in Women...

    Anglesey Street School

Gosh these names bring back so many memories. When I mentioned Miss Smith I realise now I meant Miss Slater! Miss Slater was horrible - or so it seemed to me at about 6 years of age. Sitting in the hall, crossed legged for assembly I can remember her walking along the line and kicking me to...

    Burbury Street

Wow Mohawk - the family's you mention I knew most of them! Your mom must have known mine. We lived next door to Mr. Stamper (the undertaker). I remember him giving my mom a lift with me at age 5 sitting on her lap to Dudley Road Hospital when I had a bad cut on my head. I remember the name...

    Anglesey Street School

I was at Anglesey Street School from about 1968 (started in the nursery) and left in 1976/77. Would be interested in knowing the names of the staff there then. I remember a Mrs. George, Miss Smith, Mr Powell (the caretaker), Mrs Powell (no relation I think) school secretary, Mr. Bellfield, Mrs...

    Lozells

I remember Wilkinson's very well. My Aunt used to run a shop on the opposite side of Villa Road called Junior World. It was a ladies and childrens clothes shop. She took over the premises on Villa Road which used to be the British Gas showroom. Before that she was based in Barker Street...

    Burbury Street

Thanks for the map Astoness. From looking at it, the house on the corner where the surgeon lived, I am sure were turned into shops. I am certain this is where Padmore's had their shop. I remember buying my husband to be a snooker cue from there. I have a more recent photo of the bakery which...

    Burbury Street

This is interesting. If 317 is the 317 of today, it would be situated on the left hand side of the road if you were walking up Burbury Street heading towards Lozells Road. I think it would be somewhere near the top of the street, possibly nearly opposite the bakery house, Wendy's relative John...

    T. Elvins & Sons Ltd

The only name I remember from your list is Eddie Priddle. So hard to remember names from so long ago. Alf Vickers, Noel Chesterman, John Coffey, John Davis, Harry Burston come to mind. Jobs that were worked on while I was there, Birmingham University 1290, St. Peters and Pauls, St. Chads...

Born in Dudley Road Hospital, lived in Burbury Street, Lozells for 25 years. My family lived in Lozells for over 100 years. Sold the house in Burbury Street last year - was a very sad time - end of a very long era!
