    Biddle

Funny when I read the name Biddle, all it meant to me was the Chemists. As I lived in Lozells it must have been your relatives shop in Villa Road. My mother often visited this shop.

    Test Importing Postcards

They unfornately don't seem as clear as I would like. Picture 1 is of St. James Church, Handsworth - post marked 8.8.1911 Next is a photograph of Bull Street, Birmingham post marked 8.8.1916 or could be 1906 not too sure. The last one if High Street, Sutton Coldfield post marked 4.8.1909.

    Test Importing Postcards

I have a few postcards that I thought would be nice to share with you all. However I have had to take digital pictures of them to put on here as I haven't got a scanner. So this is my first attempt so I apologise in advance if the are not very good! ]

    Shop in Burbury Street

Hi Wendy, yes you are right I was very lucky to have a close relationship with my nan. It helped that she lived next door and I saw her every day. I can only remember her as being an old lady, and it is hard to imagine the life that she led when she was younger. She died in October 1999 after...

    Shop in Burbury Street

Hi Keith - thanks for the information - it is interesting to hear about a part of the street that my family often talked about. However I think it would have been before the '60's that I am talking about. My nan was born in 1899 and I would have thought it was when she was a girl or young...

    Burbury Street

Hi Pom. I will have to check the plaque on the front of the two houses in Burbury Street as it does have the date they were built on there. I did think it was 1878 or something like that but it could just as easily be 1887. I wonder who owned these houses and were the Perry's just tenants...

    Burbury Street

Hi Wendy, what a wonderful piece. I cannot imagine what the street would have looked like before construction of the houses began. Your g grandfather was obviously an important man in the area. I remember seeing somewhere (not sure if it was on this site or not) pictures of the top of Burbury...

    Burbury Street

Thank you so much Di.Poppit. I wonder if the two families were related. It would be funny if they were as these two houses are where my parents and grandparents lived.

    Burbury Street

Could anyone do a look up for me please. I don't know if this is possible but could I find out who was living at 282 and 280 Burbury Street in 1881 and 1891. I have this information for 1901 but would love to know who lived in these two houses when they were first built and what their...

    Shop in Burbury Street

Than ks for the image Ray. It is very interesting as that part of Burbury Street had gone from when I can remember living there. We lived at the top end of Burbury Street. I wish your map had showed the top part of the street too. Am I right in concluding that the bottom part of Burbury...

    Shop in Burbury Street

Hi everyone. This probably is a little too far back for anyone to remember and I hope I have posted this query in the right place, but my nan used to tell me that a member of her family used to run a shop (may have been a sweet shop) at the bottom of Burbury Street by Burbury Park. As my nan...

    T. Elvins & Sons Ltd

Yes thats right Robert, they were a Building Contractors. They moved to Icknield Port Road, at the entrance to Edgbaston Reservoir, around 1989 I think it was. But I think they were in Naden Road for a long time. They had a joiners shop and a blacksmiths. I think the company had a lot of...

    T. Elvins & Sons Ltd

I worked for Elvins from 1981 to 1993 and have very fond memories of the place. They were originally in Naden Road which is just off Hunters Road. I don't suppose anyone has any pictures or memories they would be kind enough to share.

    Pub Names

Sorry but I have always wondered why The White Swan in Harborne is also called The Dirty Duck depending upon which side of the pub sign you are reading.

Lozells Road, Shops, Pubs, Businesses etc

I remember the night of the riots. Looking out of our window in Burbury Street with the lights off so no one would see us, watching rioters run up and down outside. It was scary. The police stood at the top of our road and just seemed to be letting them get on with it. The following morning I...

Lozells Road, Shops, Pubs, Businesses etc

Does anyone remember the Municipal Bank on Villa Road? I have just had another childhood memory of visiting this bank with mom. I just remember being "in awe" if thats the right word. You felt that you had to be on your best behaviour, perhaps it's because if you made a noise it seemed to...

Lozells Road, Shops, Pubs, Businesses etc

Thanks for the photo phil1947 - it looked very different back then. I still have family living in the area and when I lived there up until 1989 I cannot say I was frightened - having lived there all my life it's all I ever knew. When I visit now though I am wary. There are good and bad...

I've just remembered the name of the bike shop - I think it was Crowder and Browns.

Lozells Road, Shops, Pubs, Businesses etc

There was a bike shop on the corner of Lozells Road and Berners Street opposite from Villa Cross. I cannot think of the name? I may be a little out on the location. time does play tricks
