    Grandad Smiths war records

There is a service record to his brother Edward Smith with an address at the Poplars, Romsley. He served with the 7th Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment.

    Uniforms of WW1

If that is a Seaforth Highlanders badge, I'll eat my hat ... no badge, though!

    Uniforms of WW1

I would say it is definitely a Light Infantry badge, but the various LI regiments badges were so similar it is not possible to say which. If it does turn out to be KSLI, only one man named James Ross appears to have served with them - Pte 14364.

    Absent Voters List

Thank you, ladylinda. That is indeed the man. Now I have some real work to do, as he was awarded the MM in late 1918 and I don't think it was with 39th Field Ambulance! No one said this would be an easy life, did they?

    Absent Voters List

I am begging for a lookup in the 1918 AVL if possible - my sincere thanks in advance. The man I am looking for is Frank Dodd of 37 Willersey Road, Birmingham 14 although I am not sure of the date he lived there. Previously known to be at 75 Springfield Road, Moseley . He served in the Royal...

    John Thomas Stoke 1887

There is a medal index card to a S/Sjt 87083 John T Stokes, Royal Garrison Artillery. I've checked his number and it was from a batch issued to men conscripted* to the RGA in Birmingham on 27 May 1916. *and possibly to Derby Scheme volunteer recruits who happened to be being called up at the...

    Which regiment?

Although it is a bit of a squint his cap badge is that of the Machine Gun Corps. The white lanyard was used by mounted men across a variety of regiments. I can't make out enough of his trade badge (sleeve) to tell what it is. Given his age he will not necessarily appear in the medal index; he...

    W.w1 RAF RECORDS

His record will be at the National Archives unless he continued to serve after 1922. See https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/airmanraf.htm?WT.lp=rg-3194

It's a bit small to be completely sure but that looks like a Tank Corps badge to me.

Gosh that was all very quick. Thank you so much. Interesting to see two relatives (presumably) in the forces in 1918. There is information to the effect that Conyers served in the RAMC and indeed a man of that name did, but I can't find evidence to definitely link the two. With a name like...

    Absent Voters List

If anyone has ready access to it, would they mind looking up a man by the name of Conyers Kirby? He became a professional footballer for Fulham and later the Blues. I am not sure of his wartime address but in 1911 was living at 124 Ralph Road in Saltley. I would be grateful for any help on this...

William Pitt World War 1 Veteran

The RE and ASC were two separate Corps and had certainly been so since before the Second Boer War (my knowledge of military history prior to that is very hazy). The ASC became the RASC in late 1918.

Click on the one in post #7, Terry. A bigger version opens up. Still looks like RE to me!

William Pitt World War 1 Veteran

The ASC number was issued quite late in the war. It is conceivable that he was a Territorial whose 4 year term of engagement expired and he was re-enlisted into the ASC. Either that or he was transferred at some point.

William Pitt World War 1 Veteran

It's not the Royal Horse Artillery. The RHA badge of WW1 did not resemble the one shown.

William Pitt World War 1 Veteran

The cap badge appears to be that of the Royal Engineers (although if you could post one a little larger I could confirm). The small silver brooch he has on his right chest is that of a Territorial who has agreed to overseas service.

    Birmingham conscientious objectors 1916-1918

A pity. Thank you for letting me know. I'll give them a gentle prod.
