Yes, BrumBum, it was the old Ariel hut. I belonged to the 1st Harborne, 17th Birmingham troop. I have my character assessment still!!! I knew of the St. Faith and St. Laurence troop but we never (to my knowledge) met up. Apologies for the delay in reply. For some unknown reason these replies...

I tried to get in some years ago without success but a later attempt revealed how much it had been changed. On the wall was a framed newspaper photo of the members of the Saturday morning picture club. The children were taken in front of the cinema and I must have been in the picture but...

Great shame it was lost, Anthea. I often wish I'd picked up things at the time, but they weren't important then. If only I'd taken a picture of the inside of the Old Harborne Picture House, where I practically lived as a kid. Memories are o.k. but nothing like a photo!!

Thanks Anthea. Apologies for the delay in reply but your message went into something I don't use and only just came across it.

Tony, what years were you at Station Road Junior? I went there as a Secondary Modern School when Mr. Stanton was the head. My leaving certificate is dated 17.12. 1954. What year did it become a Junior School? Harborne Hill School opened while I was there and some transferred to it including...

BrumBrum, It was next to the Vine Inn. A right dump of a shop that we used to buy batteries in. Just down from it was Smith's outdoor (my grandmother always called it Trouts) which had a front shop entrance and another alongside with a casement style window servery. God help you if you used...

Sad that such a valuable building as the Royalty has been left in such a state and for so long. I've read that it might be converted into a three screen Cinema. I wondered if it would be better to convert it into a music and show venue able also to present films. There isn't too much...

Brum Brum, did you ever look in old Mr. Manton's shop window? As much dirt and dust as actual itms for sale!! And he was a strange character. I always thought him a bit spooky. David, interested to read that you led walks. Can you actually gain access to the old line from Station Road or does...

Carolina, just picked up your photo of the top end of the high Street. It's exactly as I remember it having left the village in 1961. The Mews Garage sign is fixed to the wall of O'connors paper shop. I used to deliver papers for them round Serpentine Road. If Elizabeth Redmond is reading this...

    Birmingham Cinemas

I always thought the 50's were an exciting time Cinemawise. Cinemascope was something to wonder at, especially if it was done properly. The Royalty, Harborne, had an impressive installation which, as it widened out, made for real anticipation. Not like The Picture House (Old Harborne) at the top...

You obviously remember much of what I do as I was born in 1939 and left Harborne in 1961. Hadleys had an electrical shop bordering on the Mews and I watched my first b/w t.v. in the lid of a sort of radiogram in the window. Next door, a British restaurant operated for a time (remember them?)

Having looked on Google, it seems the top end of he village has changed considerably more than the bottom end. Having said that, there seems to be far fewer old style shops and more of the Estate Agents, Bookies, Charity shops type of thing. No Co-op, no meat shops not over much to interest the...

Station Road Secondary Modern School, Harborne.

Does anyone have any photos of School members etc? Astoness mentions the School football team photo but I can't locate it.

    Birmingham Cinemas

It's surprizing to me that new multiplexes open and then, within a matter of years, disappear from the face of the earth. Can't say I much like them. Bland, little showmanship or real concern for patrons, and bare screens without curtains that somehow used to create anticipation. So different...

Thanks Wam for your reply. The ABC New Street was The Forum. Don't know anything about the Mockingbird as I've not seen the modern Birmingham although, strangely enough, I shall be spending a day there shortly so I may be able to catch up. Ellbrown, many thanks for the link to Cinematreasures...

    Birmingham Cinemas

I was trying to count up the number of Cinemas operating in B'ham city centre and within walking distance before I left in 1961. The Odeon, Gaumont, Forum, West End, Futurist, Scala, News Theatre, Tatler, and, in walking distance, Gaiety (Coleshill Street), Cinephone and the Bristol. I know the...

Thanks jnCohen for a most interesting write up. I often passed both cinemas in the 50's and on odd occaions my mum would take me to the High Street theatre. Mikejee. These are not the same pictures but again show a property that has been criminally neglected. I lived directly opposite the...

Thanks for the photo's of the reservoir. I can only remember two large square holes with water constantly pouring into them with no protective fencing round them just as you entered. Amazed it's all disappeared without trace, but then, Harborne's changed so much since the 40's/50's. Especially...

Station Road Secondary Modern School, Harborne.

I left Station Road S.M. School in 1953. I have a photo of the school staff and among the teachers not named above were Mr. Wilde, Mr. Stewart (art), Mr. Steeper, Miss Mcray (cookery), Mr. Harker (Woodwork), Miss Day and Miss Stephens (Biology). For some two years I produced a school magazine...
