Yes, the great. pre, and post war, council estates in Brum, were fantastic places to grow up, well planned with all amenities, and a very happy atmosphere, all changed now, but great memories, for us oldies!!!!

The living conditions were dire, but the community spirit was priceless, hard times , with lots of laughter!!

Hi izzy, I went to Ilmington Road, we went swimming at Harborne, but my sisters went to Princethorpe Road, and they went to Selly Oak baths, the Crisp shop, also sold packets of broken biscuits as well. happy days !!:joy:

I remember swimming at the baths, Viv, they were in Dawlish Road I am sure, and the little shop where you could get a huge packet of broken crisps for a penny. !!

I remember that, exact item, as a either lamp, or waste pipe, Viv, lived in Weoley Castle, and went passed it every week end, coming into Selly Oak. thanks!!

I believe it was called that, after the steel spike, used to separate the naval tarred rope, called "picking Oakum", which was the main (employment), of the undeserving poor!!!!

Looking at Mickejee's map what strikes me, is the greenery everywhere, looks just like a village, given the early date, 1731, the industrial revolution, hadn't kicked in yet, astonishing when I put this area, into my time frame, of 1950's early 60's!!!

So very true Richard, even as a lad, in the 1950's, our summers were long and hot, with very sparse rain, we would leave home at about 8am, with a bottle of water and some jam sandwiches, and not be home till around 6 pm, no one worried, and we were all as brown as walnuts, by summers end.!!!
