    Clarke Family of Ladywood

Trying to gain some information about my father's brother and sister - Violet Clarke, born March 1906 and John Thomas Clarke, born April 1908. Last address was Stoke Street, off Broad Street in 1913. They were probably taken into the care of Birmingham Council between 1913 and 1918 and may have...

    Mangle or Wringer

Ours was a wringer. My Mom bought it just as the snow started in 1947 and as it was in the backyard it couldn't be used for many weeks. I was told not to put my fingers anywhere near the rollers which of course I did and had some nice squashed fingers and no doubt yelled blue murder. Was told it...

    Branch Workhouse, Deritend

Does anyone have any information on the Branch Workhouse, probably on the corner of Moore's Row and Floodgate Street (probably the site before Floodgate School was built)? It is shown in the Kelly's Directory for 1879.

    Srawley Family

My William George Srawley was born in 1863, son of William George, born 1835. In 1881 they were at 21 Ladypool Lane, Balsall Heath and all those of working age were lamp makers. I think the problem is that nobody taking the census knew how to spell Srawley so it could be Sawley or even...

    Clarke Family

Looking for any info on Violet and John Thomas Clarke, born 1905 and 1908 in Ladywood. Parents were David Clarke and Maud Kemp. Probably put into one of Birmingham Cottage Homes when their father became ill about 1916 and subsequently died in 1918. Maud remarried an Arthur Clarkson in 1918.

    Clarke Family of Ladywood

I don't think there's any connection, but you never know. My Samuel was born in 1875 and his father was John Thomas Clarke, a tube drawer, who died in 1891. There's some similar names but the dates are too early for yours. My father, Albert Clarke, was brought up in Marston Green Orphanage so...

    Industrial Schhol (Children's Home)

Does anyone know why a child in Walsall Workhouse in 1881 would be at a Girls' Industrial School in Bath in 1891? I understand that Industrial Schools were for children brought before the courts because of destitution rather than crime but why would they send them so far away from their home...

Does anyone have any info on Treadwells? My father was apprenticed there after leaving Marston Green Cottage Homes in 1928. Are there any apprenticeship records in any of the archives? Thanks

Thanks for this very useful information. Samuel Clarke was my father's uncle. All I need now is to find some descendants of Samuel and Rosetta.
