    Smithfield Garage

At least Smithfield supplied barrier cream for the hands. Pink stuff called Rozalex? I always used it and I was only in the stores. If I remember correctly not many garages supplied it. No latex gloves in those days !

    Smithfield Garage

I've forgotten his surname. I still remember that sort of hut at the end of the workshop where Gordon in the blue overalls and the manager (I've forgotten his name!) in a gray dustcoat were based. Two smashing blokes.

I was there in 72/73 and I remember a Gordon who was the workshop foreman and a very good water polo player. Bob Johnson on this forum was also at Smithfield and he is the man to ask.

It could have been the late Stan Dilke who was parts manager when I worked there in 1971.

    Smithfield Garage

Thanks for the info. You've also reminded me about a storeman named Neil who I worked with. This must be Neil Priday who used to drive the Type 2 pick up a lot. Thanks again.

    Smithfield Garage

Any chance you remember the name of the 'senior' storeman at Smithfield? I worked with him. He was an avid Blues fan. His first name was George but I just cannot remember his surname. This was 72-73.

Roger Miller says sorry to hear about the too early demise of 'Chopper' Hadley. 'We all used to go in his car to some pub (The Fish?) by Stratford. What was the pub called? Ed was an excellent driver, very smooth.'

I've contacted Roger Miller and this is his reply. 'Ralph Banthorpe. He ended my interest in 100 and 220 yards running on Saturday 14th May 1966 (FA Cup Final Day) at Aldersley Stadium Wolverhampton. North Midlands Schools Championships. I never realised I was running against lads two years...

I definitely remember the fish shop and I think they had a greengrocers as well but I might be wrong about that.

    Harborne

Morgan's must have been a gold mine in those days. Ideal position on that end of the High Street. Opposite across Serpentine Road you'll remember another legendary business, Murray's Greengrocers and Fish and Chip Shop. Harborne was a village in those days.

The Harborne Village Social Club was definitely a cinema. The Kings Arms was finally demolished about three years ago and is now a block of flats.

    P.J. Evans Essex Street

So Triumph and Jaguar moved to Essex Street and Rolls Royce/Bentley moved into Granville Street? I kept thinking that the Essex Street workshop was just Jaguar. I used to watch the rolling road if it was being used when I had to go to the workshop as some parts were stored upstairs. However...

    P.J. Evans Essex Street

I now remember Steve Dutton. I was wrong to say he was on the front counter in Essex Street. He was down the road in the stores in PJ's workshop in Essex Street. That must be where you knew him from. He was a mate of Albert Stretton's who was on the front counter with me, Mike Collins and...
