You and I both. Terrific act. We were probably both there at the same time! If I remember correctly it was a mid - week gig.

Birmingham Nightclubs of the Past - Memories

Does anyone who worked at Barbarellas 1973/4 remember a DJ called Steve Kazee who called himself Stevie K? His day job was at P J Evans where I worked at that time.

    P.J. Evans Essex Street

Yes, we could do with a lot more who worked at both places. I would really like to find out how they are and the stories they could tell about those days.

Any chance you remember Carol the parts driver's surname? I cannot remember and it bothers me. The Granville Street Morris 1000 van GFD 23K she drove is still in existence as a lad at Granville Street bought it in 1978 and he has kept it in terrific condition ever since.

    Smithfield Garage

Mermaid Motors certainly jogs my memory now you've mentioned it. Was it on Coventry Road or Stratford Road before it moved to Marston Green? Were you at Smithfield Garage at all?

I did not know about the band equipment and I'd never heard of Reginald Gore so I've learnt something more about PJ's. Much appreciated. Did you know Albert Stretton? I sometimes wonder what has happened to all the staff at PJ's who I worked with.

    P.J. Evans Essex Street

Malcolm Palmer had left PJ's some years before. He is shown in Kelly's Directory 1967/68 as having a garage at Thimblemill Lane Aston repairing Jaguars. He was a regular customer at the Essex Street parts department up the road from where you worked when I was there 1973-74. You must have known...

    P.J. Evans Essex Street

Anyone remember Malcolm Palmer who was a mechanic at PJ's then opened his own place in Thimblemill Lane Aston servicing/repairing Jaguars? He was the first person I served on the front counter in Essex Street in May 73. It was for a gasket for a Borg Warner 35 auto box. He was a pal of star...

    Rootes Birmingham

Was this where George Heath's had their massive spares department? I went there once in the 1970s. It was definitely on Coventry Road.

    Smithfield Garage

Yes, I worked in some places where clouds of paint used to drift through the workshop and where electrical leads were plugged into wall sockets with matchsticks but that's the way it was then. You've reminded me just how many small garages there were in those days. Where did you work in those...

    Smithfield Garage

I still use Swarfega and sand. Very effective. If I remember correctly Smithfield also had, by the standard of the day, very good washing facilities and the workshop had excellent equipment. I do not remember ever seeing a mechanic having to lie on the floor using axle stands unlike some garages...
