    Enquire Within Upon Everything

Berners-Lee didn't do it all on his own he had some help from a Belgian friend, Robert Cailliau, who also designed the WWW logo. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Cailliau

    Origins of the Brummie accent

I can tell you off hand that accents or dialects are born in close knit communities, those that had little contact with other communities. Here in Flanders almost every street and certainly every town has its own accent or dialect. This diversity and lack of country wide unity happens because...

Holidays spent in Wales as a child.

Jean, lovely thread and photos! As a kiddie I never had a holiday in Wales but from about the age of 13 I started doing regular solo cycle trips into the Welsh mountains. At 14 I cycled all the way round the Welsh coast, Brum to Brum in 10 days sleeping in my little garden tent, and the Welsh...

    Birmingham in 1950s

Elizabeth, this could be a very good topic on Birmingham History I hope that you get some good replies. I'd just like to add my bit saying that my mom was made a war widow left with 5 kids and though I think she could have got help her pride got in the way. She worked at the BSA most of her...

The sayings of our teachers - Can you remember any?

Post #49 reminded me of my last year in Dennis Road School when our PT teacher 'Taffy' Jones gave me a zero on my rapport with the comment "very weak". I often wonder if he knew about my escapades in one of the toughest sports on this earth. In one of his lessons I badly dislocated my fingers...

    Brummie sayings & language

Very good Thylacine! I was just about to add that here in Belgium and Holland we also use the word 'kwak' when referring to a dubious doctor and I see from your Wikipedia link that the English use of the word has it's origins in the Dutch/Flemish language. We still use the word 'kwakzalver' in...

    Thanks

All too true Amanda and I'll second that as it is through this site that I found my long lost family. Through my success it also helped my cousin Frederick to find his roots. As you are a newish member you wouldn't know how much these folk have helped me; take a look at this...

Cyclo Gear, Aston-who didn't work there?!

Malcog, I'll do that and try and get him to join in on the forum but you'll have to send me a private instant message with your real name as I don't think he would recognise 'Malcog',:) Graham.

Bernard, thank you for your well wishes and my wife is still making progress. No I'm sorry to say that I've never heard of Vin Cox. In my younger days I too have often dreamed of a round the world cycling trip but I've always felt that my family needs me here and that would be more of an ego...

The sayings of our teachers - Can you remember any?

At Dennis Road school in the 50's we had sex education from some specially trained bloke and when he came into the class our teacher, Mr Griffiths, would leave the room but for our last session we could pose, anomalously, any question we liked about sex. Our teacher didn't leave the room for...

I was/am good friends with Alan Richards of Tower Cycles, he took over the shop after his dad passed away. He now lives in France and we're still in touch. Graham.

Tips on organising family history papers

Anything lager than A4 I take to a copy shop and where possible have a copy reduced to size A4 so that it is easier to file in a ring map (lever arch & plastic wallet). And the reason that I keep everything is to pass it on to my kids so I make enough copies and spread them around the family so...
