Hi Rose, sorry for any delay but I've only just seen your posting. Lily was my mother and we lived in Leamington Road at 2/66 you must then be my cousin! Did you have sisters Jean and Patsy? Having trouble with photo but I'll try again; you must have lived at N° 11 (11/64) Grafton Grove...

Thanks again Darrell and thanks to Shera who had posted me these photos from Ancestry, I've dated them at about 1880. I'll be in touch via email and send you details of the Webb side of our family, Graham.

Astonian, I don't think that the Sheldon family you mention are on my family tree, it seems to be quite a frequent name. Maybe more luck with Darrell, Graham.

A new book out on the 30th May 2013, ‘On the Road Bike’ by SKY and ITV sports presenter, Ned Boulting, devotes his third chapter, ‘Nobody would go with me’, to the story of my difficult early years in Sparkbrook, Birmingham. I'm also mentioned in his chapters on Mick Bennett and Tommy Godwin...

My granddad's, John Sheldon, birth certificate.

Shera, that looks just about spot on as after long searching I did find John had died a POW at Hamburg in December 1918. https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/902646/SHELDON, J And if you saw my posting on St Gabriel's Church you'll see that the marriage on 26 Nov to florence is spot on...

In the past I’ve had great help from forum members in finding my past family, especially when I went on a quest to find my long lost half brothers. https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=10357&highlight=long+lost+half+brothers Now from the Birmingham Council Register Office I’ve...

Newman Bros Coffin Works Fleet Street

My own fault for not being on the forum these days but I thought I'd run out of history to tell until I saw Wendy's link on FB to this place. In the early 60's (1962) I worked next door to this place in Fleet Street, it was called Rayboulds Brass Founders and is now a Vietnamese Restaurant. I'm...

    Vulcan Bomber Fly-past

Once saw 9 Vulcans take off in formation at Farnborough air show but can't remember the year; awesome sound and sight! The Vulcan could carry the Avro stand-off bomb that could be dropped thousands of miles from its target!

    The English Language.

Any language is a living thing and will change to suit our needs. There is nothing worse than not moving with the times and I'm really happy to see that awful "posh" English disappearing.

    Dayus Square

Wonderful news; well done Brum! It was through this forum that I learnt about and read Kathleen's books. Someone on the forum told me that her hop-picking experiences were similar to my own so I bought her books. My own hop-picking story can still be found on this forum...

Fred, it's not so much the frame design but the material used today is stronger (stiffer) lighter therefore the effort is transmitted better to the wheels. Here's a photo of our local train station cycle parking, Ghent, in Belgium. Hope you don't miss your train!

    Brooke Tool Greet

Alison, thank you for your reply but none of the people you name rings a bell, not that they are not related but I know so little about them to be sure. Albert's shop was in the centre of Birmingham, not on the Warwick Rd. On my mother's side Ann Burbidge, b 1831, married to Joseph Shakespeare...
