The fourth and final part of my story on British Cycling's website is out today. I know that I look a 'bit' haggard in the photo but I'd just had a night out with family and friends, a whole coach load of em, at the Ghent indoor six day cycle race...

    Embassy Roller Rink Walford Road

While on our Dennis Road school trip to Douglas Holiday Camp on the Isle of Man, at the age of 11, I started roller skating and in my early teens was a big time visitor, with my cousin Frederick, to the Embassy Roller Rink only giving up roller skating for cycling. That Irish club, 'The Harp'...

    Salford Park Aston cycling

Louis, Once again a brilliant photo. Riding behind those pacers with a bicycle at Salford Park must have been very dangerous as the bankings were far to shallow for motor pacing at any speed. Here is a photo of me on that track in 1966.

Hi all it's me again saying thank you to all that have looked at this thread started by our captain, 'Postie'. Today I received my invitation to British Cycling's 'Gala awards night' in Manchester on the 20th of February. And also today they published part 3 of my story on their web site...

Terry, Looking through this it seems to be some kind of stabilizer for (I think) a 'Penny Farthing' type of bicycle. With this type of bicycle the pedals were directly attached to the hub of the front wheel, which was the driving wheel, with each push of say the right pedal you would tend to...

Chris, The amount of attention that I've been getting this year is phenomenal. I don't know if I've told you that I already have British Cycling’s highest award, 'The Gold Medal of Honour', (see photo) and now inducted into their first 'Hall of Fame'. Please don't worry about that Broad...

Robert & Mossy, thanks again for your postings. Terry, that is very interesting and what a wonderful piece of Birmingham history! Especially to me being mechanically minded and a bit of a cycle innovator myself in the 50's, but then I turned all my time to riding my bike. I have printed your...

biffo, thanks for that, I remember the glass case very well and spent many hours in that little gem of a museum. I could even leave my bike outside without it getting pinched! Graham.

Fred you do make me laugh and not only with your funny emails. Since those early days at Earlswood I've added many a 'U' shaped bike to my collection. That first one was my Hercules.

Ha Fred! You remember things that I'd long forgotten. When I stopped racing and started an honest life here in Belgium I used that fixed wheel bike to go to work on and rode home behind the gaffers moped. He could get 40 mph (60 kph) out of the thing and when I was warmed up I'd overtake him...

Here is a (bad) photo of my 10 mile, 25 mile and 1 hour British record breaking ride at Salford Park, Birmingham on Monday evening the 11th July 1966 on this orange & blue Tommy Godwin, of Silver Street, bike. I had been at work all day!

Hi Fred, When I stopped racing I didn't touch a bike for some 14 years, then I started going to work on this bike. This lasted for about 10 years then it hung in my garage until 5 years ago when Dave Marsh offered to restore my bike to it's 1966 state, Dave is Britain's best bike builder and...
