    Icknield Street

I also remember going under that bridge often, to go to the flat. I also hated it, especially when a train went over, Id rush through as fast as I could. We were told that it had stalagnite's (spelling) hanging which were what dripped. However, they are great photo's and wonderful memories, so...

    Icknield Street

Yes Lyn, I thought the same thing about the crashed bus. The turning there off Spring Hill into Icknield St was quite sharp. Looking at the pram on the Stoddards pic, I would date it late 50's early 60's. What do you think?

    Icknield Street

Stoddards Lyn, where my dad worked up until his death in 1962. I bet I knew that lady walking with her pram, as lived just a little way up from the van. The shop to the right of Stoddards was a general household type shop, sold towels, aprons, bedding, nightdresses etc etc., I remember buying a...

    Icknield Street

Lovely pic Lyn, I wonder what year that was taken, because the Walter Smith butchers shop used to be Stoddards when I lived down there. You said you used to get the No 8 bus to go roller skating at Springhill rink. I used to walk there to go Ice skating in the late 50's.

Thank you again Stars. Strange that I couldn't remember Horsefair being in the city centre, is it still called Horsefair then? I went to Camden St School which I am sure should also have been a building worth keeping. Have seen some nice pics of it on the BHF. Still, there have been a lot of...

    Icknield Street

Thank you again Stars, my brother went to Icknield St School, and I wondered if it was still there, but used as a place for foreign worshippers ??? Does anyone know. Also, as a child, I remember going to a place called 'Horsefair', does anyone know where that was or is?

    Aston hippodrome

I saw her too Ray, I had forgotten about that. We always had one of her calendars hanging over the mantlepiece in the old back to backs..very risque. also saw Max Miller, now I was too young to understand his jokes, so I laughed when all the adults did.

    Summer Lane

Lovely pic Lyn, and brings back many memories for me. My mother worked at a pram factory on the left hand side of this pic. Is the pub on the right hand side the Shakespeare?

    Aston hippodrome

When I was a child, I used to be taken to the Aston Hippodrome every Saturday night. The folks I lived with had what they called their 'own seat's' in the front circle. We saw many stars of the day. It was either a variety or a revue, they probably alternated. There used to be topless models...

    Coalmen/coal yards

I remember our coal man. He was gorgeous and I fancied him like mad. I never bothered to count the sacks !!!!!

    Items that have faded away

I have just thought of another fashion thing we had in early 1960's. Does anyone remember those flesh coloured stockings that were all the rage? I wore my with gun metal stilleto shoes. There used to be a shoe shop on Spring Hill called Curtis's, they probably had a chain of shops, but I always...

Carolina, I loved the pic of the family with their Gondola baskets, I wasn't sure of the spelling but I think this is the correect one. I accidentally left mine in a loft when moving house. I think Vanity cases came before these didn't they. I still have mine, but it's in a sorry state now. I...

Gosh Carolina, it all sounds very unhealthy to me. Did you manage to burn any fat off with the Stephanie Bowman?

    Items that have faded away

I can't remember Carolina, I seem to think they didn't have them because I remember garters being worn. The corsets were a fleshy pink colour as rosie says, and come to think of it the vest was worn underneath the corset. Roll ons always had the attached suspenders didn't they?

    Items that have faded away

Lady Leaver, I had forgotten that, of course someone always knocked on the door to tell you that the chimney was on fire. Chimney fires used to frighten the life out of me, I think they still would.

    Items that have faded away

It was always the Birmingham Mail in our house, and it was fun watching it burst into flames then throwing it onto the fire quickly, sometimes if the chimney needed sweeping it would set the chimney on fire, as it flew up the chimney. My step mother was a poker addict, always poking the fire...
