    Old street pics..

That's a shame Lyn, you missed a treat not ever going there. They used to have cream leather sofa's in the waiting area, whilst you waited for the film of your choice to begin. Lot's of 'Stars' photo's on the wall's. To me it was the best cinema in the town. Love the atmospheric photo of St...

It certainly is Wendy. If it wasn't for that church, I don't think I would know where I was in the city centre anymore. Lovely old buildings gone, and ugly new one's in their place, no character at all.

Great pic Lyn. Can't believe those photographers standing on the Gaumont canopy, and the one on the windowsill next door. People are always so smartly dressed in these old pics aren't they? The Gaumont was one of my favourite cinema's in Brum, such a luxurious place.

I wouldn't have a clue what sort of planes they were maypolebaz, I was so disappointed that I could go up in one. Brummie Nick was lucky enough to go in one I see. It would have been the early fifties when I used to go to Elmdon with my dad, certainly not the late forties. I suppose they used to...

    Brummie sayings & language

Judy, when I have jobs to do and can't get on for some reason, I always say 'Well this won't get the baby a new bonnet'. Which is what your mom used to say, for the same reason I would imagine.

What a lovely photo of you and your lovely dad Wendy. I have similar photo's of me with my dad too. Because we lost our dad's when they were far to young, these photo's mean such a lot. You are very much like your dad on that pic.

I remember 'Billy Bean' too. The song used to go...Billy Bean built a machine to see what it would do..can't remember anymore batmadviv, but maybe your husband can. The very first childrens programme I can remember was called 'Bits and Pieces'. 'Hank' was one of my favourites too.

I remember doing the same thing with my dad. I always wanted to go up for a flight in the plane at 10/- a time, but I don't think dad could afford it.

I do remember them carolina. I think they were early fifties so a bit before I was old enough to wear them. Do you remember what they called 'sun dresses', which were strappy, flared, flowery dresses, suitable for holidays.

Stitcher, Borax is used these days in factories that manufacture cardboard, but whether it is still available generally I'm not sure. The only Arm and Hammer I see these days is toothpaste. Never seen Kirks soap though.

I do remember Valentine Dyall. I think he was called 'The Man in Black' wasn't he? He was very spooky. Paul Temple I also remember, but didn't listen to it. My friend was a great fan of the Archers, and if we were out playing, she always had to go in and listen to them, which annoyed me...

Hello Astonian, yes I can picture the scene. Anywhere where there are pigs, there will be cockroaches (black bats). We had a slaughter house at the back of where I grew up, and the pigs were delivered every Sunday afternoon ready for the slaughter on Monday mornings. I hated it, and all the...

Carolina, I always assumed that black bats were cockroaches, were they? We certainly had them in the house I grew up in.

I was also terrified of the Quatermass Experiment too maypolebaz. Also there was one called The Abominable Snowman, and that was also really frightening.

I don't think you can Carolina. It was used for crops many many years ago, some sort of insect killer, but it proved to be poison and that practice was stopped. I think most of us remember it as bug killer for houses don't we?

I wouldn't miss 'Saturday Club' on the wireless (obviously Saturday mornings). I also loved Archie Andrews on Sundays, Two way family favourites, Housewives Choice, Mrs Dales Diary, Oh and perhaps before some of these 'Rays a laugh' with Ted Ray. There were so many good radio programmes in those...

I remember all those Mike jenks. I liked Mr Turnip can't remember when he was obnoxious, too young to be critical I suppose. Viv, I too loved the catalogues, and I had Trafford. It was quite difficult to find enough customers to be able to have the account I remember. I think you had to get at...

There hasn't always been first and second class postage Viv. I am certain that all letter post was the same, but of course parcels would have been weighed. I do seem to remember that if birthday cards and Christmas cards were sent through the post unsealed, then it was a bit cheaper. I wonder if...
