Was Cyril Lord carpet foam backed then? Oh did we all have to make a start with that sort of thing? It was hopeless, the longer it stayed down, the more mess it made when getting it up. All the dust used to fall down into the cracks of the floorboards in the bedrooms. I do remember Cyril Lord...

Hello Pete. Yes Icknield St school is still there, but it sort of stands back from the main Rd now. Things around there have changed so much. It's the school you went to then? My brother also attended that school, but he left a long time before you did. The Mint is slowly disappearing, as it is...

Very good stars, just look at the prices for the cinema seats. I bet those picture houses were packed. Didn't realize that there used to be another cinema in that area other than the Paladium.

Very nice stars, thank you. Can't say that I remember any of the films, but recognise some of the stars names. The little advert at the bottom right of the programme list mentions Ellen St, I lived quite close to there. Well come to that I lived a stone's throw from the Gaumont.

    Birmingham in 1950s

Yes Viv, I think it was something to do with the football pools, you have reminded me, thank you. I am trying to think of the name of the man who used to do 'Saturday Club' on Sat mornings on Radio 2. He had the most wonderful speaking voice. Using imagination, I pictured the handsomest man to...

    Birmingham streets named after people

WE have a small lane around here called 'The Dole'. I wonder, does the dole have another meaning other than the obvious one? I did know a builder who built an estate, and he had to put forward his suggestion for the name of the main road in, and then wait for approval and acceptance. Don't know...

I remember Jack Jackson too maypolebaz, I don't know if my memory is getting bad, but I always thought it was on a Saturday. What was that other thing that used to come on Luzembourg, when they used to repeat Keynsham, does anyone remember?

A pic of Icknield St, looking towards the library. Have a feeling that this one has been on before though.

It was Lyn, and still is. There were no shops at all at the top end of Carver St. In fact there was only one tiny shop in that street called Knibbs at the end near Warstone Lane, who sold things like milk/sweets and tobacco. The newsagent at the top end of Icknield St, Howards, obviously used to...

    Birmingham streets named after people

I now live in Cambridge, but when I first came to live here, the village I lived in had a road running at the back of the cottage called 'The Icknield Way', which ran from Royston in Herts, This was also single track. I thought all these 'Icknield's' were an original Roman road, that ran almost...

I hated having to go for the Argus, because at that time of day it was usually pretty quiet at the top of Carver St, where the man who had a newsagent at the top of Icknield St used to bring his wheel barrow with the Argus paper's for sale. I used to run as fast as my legs would carry me...

Lyn, they wouldn't have the know how or the money to build like that anymore. Makes me wonder who did build them, obviously good architects in their day, everything was so ornamental and finished with such flare, it all made Brum what it isn't today.

Yes Lyn, that's absolutely true, we did stick to the picture houses close to where we lived. I had a choice of The Palladium, The Grove and the Edgbaston, and mostly I went to these. Suppose I only went to the Gaumont a couple of times. Great pics again Lyn, I like Christchurch Passage. The loss...
