    Button Maker

Thanks David - prior to this I had no idea buttons were such big business! I guess they`re something I`ve always taken for granted until I discovered my own family`s involvement. I think in my case, the Bromsgrove link is probably the best bet but thanks for all your info Jane

    Button Maker

I`ve an ancestor who was a button-maker in Upton Warren, Worcs in the 1840s/50s. Can anyone tell me anything about this - i.e. would he have done it at home and what would the buttons be made from? I`m guessing they might have been made from something like horn but how would they be cut to the...

    waterman

Thanks very much John. Do you know if they tried to include people like that on the Census - it must have been hard to catch up with people who were moving around all the time?

    waterman

I have an ancestor who is described as a `waterman`s wife` on the 1871 census - she lived in Lower Mitton (Stourport). What did a waterman do? I can`t find him on the census (I know he was still alive), so maybe he was working away somewhere. Many thanks

    Ancestry website query

Thanks Malta that`s actually quite reassuring - perhaps the site is going through a particularly bad time at the moment? As you say, it is frustrating - especially when you`ve paid a subscription to one site and then find you`re having `to top it up` with another. Jane

Thanks everyone - I do appreciate your offers of help - I just wanted to check it wasn`t something I was doing wrong that was causing the problem.

    Ancestry website query

I`m fairly new to `Ancestry` and probably being particularly thick but when I try to go directly to births, marriages or deaths and put in the relevant info I keep being told there are no matches found - even when I know for sure that there should be one. Any ideas? (I find their `help`...

    Carpet makers

In 1881 my great grandmother was a `picker at carpet works` in Lower Mitton (which later became part of Stourport). Does anyone know what this job involved? Thanks

    searching Irish records

My grandfather was born somewhere in Ireland in 1882 approx when his father`s regiment was based there. I`ve contacted the regimental museum and they were based in several locations so I can`t pinpoint where he was born. What are my chances of being able to find a record of his birth, and what...

    tan yard labourer

In 1891 my great grandfather was a tan yard labourer. He lived in Lower Mitton, Kidderminster which I believe later became part of Stourport. Does anyone have any ideas about where he may have worked? I had no idea there was any kind of tanning industry in this area.

    Plumbers

Thanks very much for that information. One of them was also a glazier so maybe his expertise in working with lead extended to leaded lights.

    Plumbers

Two of my ancestors were plumbers in the 1840s - as most of the jobs we associate with plumbing now didn`t exist then, what would they have been doing?
