Help Please! I have just received the birth certificate for Julia Hall who was born 25/10/1848 in Hill Street Birmingham (sub-district St Philips). According to this her parents are William Hall (plasterer) and Matilda Simmons. I believe she was their eldest child. However, on the 1851...

    Lozells House

The parents are Benjamin and Jane Williams - Benjamin was a master maltster. In 1851 and 1861 their home is identified as Lozells House - the houses nearby have other names or are just described as being in Lozells Road. I think it must have been reasonably affluent as they had servants. Jane

    Birmingham or Aston?

I`m trying to find out about the death of Thomas Wallis but I could do with some more info before I send for the certificate. He was born about 1816 & lived in Great King Street in 1861 & his widow was still there in 1871. There are 2 possible deaths in 1862 - one Jan/Mar in Birmingham...

John Sketchley Williams, Lozells Road Aston

Hello Mike I must admit I hadn`t realised Lozells Road was such a prosperous area - I think John was the last member of the family to be living in that house so I guess it is likely that his assets included the value of the house. Thanks for your help Jane

    myton house

Hi Tina - I`m afraid I can`t be of much help but your post stood out for me as I grew up on Myton Road, Warwick in the 1960s. I see from Google that there is a Myton House in Claverdon which isn`t in Warwick itself - I wonder if you mean this. I don`t remember anywhere called Myton House but...

John Sketchley Williams, Lozells Road Aston

I`m hoping to find out more about John Sketchley Williams who lived in Lozells Road between 1841 and his death in March 1871. In 1851 & 61 he is listed as a Bankers clerk but by the time his mother Elizabeth died in 1868 he is calling himself a `Gentleman`. According to the Probate Calendar...

    Marriage by licence or banns?

Please can anyone explain why a couple would choose to be married by licence rather than by banns? I thought that a licence was used if it was outside of the couple`s own parish but am now looking at one for 1760 where the bride is definitely from that parish & the groom is from the...

    Probate query please

I have found 3 relatives in Ancestry`s Probate records - one says `Effects under £1500`, one `Effects under £3000` and one `Effects under £9000` - they are for deaths in the 1860s & 1870s. But what exactly does this mean? What relevence do these amounts have to the amount of money which was...
