I agree with you. On such occasions I ask for a translation into Standard English - one of the perks of being an elderly pedant.

Language is always changing. if it didn't we would still be speaking like Chaucer. Some expressions come and do not last. ATMs are not often called ATMs any more but 'hole in the wall' or 'pushie' short for 'push button'. When I was still working a member of senior management young enough to be...

    M E HJELTER, War Bride

Thanks Janice. I too missed it when I searched all 627 pages until I found my mother's name. I can apply to Canada for more details but it will have to wait a week. France beckons. Have traced my father's route from Juno beach until he left France for Holland with the reconnaissance regiment...

Yes, I too am puzzled. Perhaps there were so many wives they put on extra ships but I doubt there were spare ships. Somewhere there will be a record of ship movements at that time. The departure date of the Aquitania fits better with the time scale of 7 days and nights to cross the Atlantic and...

Thanks for the information. Do you know the date and port it berthed in Canada? On ancestry the C in my grandmother's name is badly printed and is an O as my grandfather's name was Ole. Vivienne

Thank you very much Janice. It certainly seems to be the one my mother sailed on. It does not give the date of docking or the port, but other ships seem to have docked at Halifax, Nova Scotia. I was led to believe that she went from Southampton on the Aquitania (Cunard/White Star line) but had...

How kind of you. Taken from the Ancestry record it is sheet 627 of 899. My mother's name on the sheet is M E HJELTER. My father's Regt. No, Rank and initials were M67133, Cfm RE. The UK address is 47 Francis Road, Stechford, Birmingham 9 (now it is 33). The destination in Canada is Mrs. O...

It is my mother's movements I am trying to track in 1946. I know the month she went and that she arrived in Edmonton on 1st August but searching Ancestry gave me no more information. It must be the level of subscription that holds the key. Thanks for your help.

Number 36 bus stuart rd stechford terminus

When I used to live in Francis Road, Stechford as a child it was the 36 bus that took me to the nearest swimming bath at Sparkhill, before Stechford pool was built. The terminus was at the top of Richmond Road outside Stechford Primary school, known locally as Albert Road School. batmadviv

Thanks Carolina but I have seen the person's name on a card index on Ancestry but there are no dates and no name of the ship that she sailed on. I have worked out the month that she went by other means but no ship's name nor port of entry into Canada. The actual dates would be good. batmadviv

Please can anyone tell me how to find out when a war bride left England to join her husband, the name of the ship she sailed on, from which port the ship left, the name of the port in Canada and the date the ship docked? batmadviv

    Birmingham in 1950s

Are the sisters of 'Holy Clare' the same as the sisters of 'Poor Clare'? The Poor Clare convent at Temple Balsall closed a couple of years ago. Not enough ladies becoming nuns apparently. Batmadviv

    New Birmingham library plans

I went inside the studio theatre at the new library the other night to hear the creator of Inspector Banks, Peter Robinson, speak. I was satisfied with the comfort of the seats but it is a pity they were not all the same shade of red. Were they fitted by someone who is colour blind? I think it...

I too was a pupil at Cropwood from 1954 to 1956. Miss Marjorie Urquhart was the head - a very fine head teacher - and Miss P.Z. Zoar taught the youngest age group. Miss Williams was deputy. It was at Cropwood where my interest in bats began. I remember having chilblains. When any chilblains...

    Byng Kenrick Girls' Grammar School

For any 'old' BK ladies out there, sadly Miss Derrick died more than 10 years ago. She was a lovely teacher. If any of you are interested in meeting each other to catch up, the Christmas get together in the Jewellers Arms on December 15th may be an opportunity. Organised by Astoness. I think it...
