    Massive Ordnance Air Blast

The bouncing bomb has been mentioned a couple of times in this thread. Found out on Saturday at the Seaside Museum in Herne Bay, Kent, that the bomb was originally tested for bouncing just off Reculver Beach, a couple of miles east of Herne Bay. The shallow waters at low-tide enabled the bombs...

    History of vehicle registration numbers

Two photos of the Lord Mayor's car taken in about December 1987. One photo is of the car itself and the other is with people passing by. I guess the car always keeps the LOM 1 registration but I don't know how often the actual car is changed. Dave.

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

In the set of negatives I found yesterday the one taken after the paper-seller is higher up Corporation Street looking back towards New Street. A 52 bus to Perry Beeches via Walsall Road is shown as well as the Nathan Clock. Can't quite see Ratners as it is obscured but there is an advert for...

    Newspaper vendors sellers

Another Evening Mail newspaper stand but I think at a different location from the one above. Again, the 1980s. The chap looks like a doorman from a hotel. The headline that day stated: Aid Plane Blasted; 5 die. Dave.

They Were Caught In Our Old Street Pics...

I showed a heavily cropped version of this newspaper seller in #1952 but we weren't sure where in the city centre he was located. Near Snow Hill station was the best bet. I have just found the negative so I am showing an uncropped version. The bus going past is a number 22 to Kitwell. The...

    Advertising in the past

With reference to the previous post (#375), my wife sometimes says that I'm "nonpareil". It means "having no match or equal" or "unrivalled". Dave.

    Doris Day

Happy Birthday Doris Day. One of her most famous songs was Que Sera, Sera (Whatever will be, will be). It was sung in the film "The Man who knew too much", directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The song was given an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1957 at Hollywood. Dave.

    The War in Burma

I watched the Vera Lynn is 100 television programme a couple of weeks ago and it was mentioned that she was one of a small number of entertainers to visit the troops in Burma. However, the first act to be flown over to entertain the troops in Burma was Gert and Daisy (Elsie and Doris Waters)...

    Hudson's book shops

A good map was certainly useful for planning or leading a ramble. I always felt that the 1 inch maps were of too small a scale for this purpose. The Birmingham and Midland Institute Ramblers had a Map Library with maps at 6 inches to the mile. I think the Ordnance Survey phased them out in...

    Pantomimes At The Alex

I kept a diary between 1958 and 1967 and have recorded that on the 28th December 1960, in the afternoon, I went to see the pantomime "Sinbad the Sailor" at the Alexandra Theatre. It starred Morecambe and Wise. Also starring was George Lacy (who I cannot recall). Watched "Wells Fargo" on TV in...

    Harry lucas school

Hello Peg. Tony Britton appeared at the Birmingham Hippodrome in My Fair Lady opening on Monday August 24th in 1964. Jill Martin played Eliza. I did go and see it and a flyer for the musical is shown below. It has been reported elsewhere that Tony Britton was born in Birmingham (9th June 1924)...

    Tolkien's Birmingham

I feel it's a bit of an indictment on a neighbourhood when even a humble café (#75) needs metal security shutters to protect it. I remember taking a bus along the Stratford Road a couple of years ago, after the shops had closed, and nearly every shop had metal pull-down security shutters. In my...

    Advertising in the past

Slightly similar advertiser's name to the above post (#318) but I guess most people could distinguish between a motor car and a pair of socks. A 1951 advert for Wolsey socks below. Dave.

    Bhf Easter Meet Up 2017

My mother won a giant Easter Egg once but I cannot remember the charity. This photograph was taken in April 1963. I think it took us days and days to consume it all but perhaps we gave some away. Dave.

Very close! I believe the date when the event was held was the 7th July 1906. Dave

    See Birmingham by Post Card

Picked-up this postcard today at an antiques fair in Woking. It is called "The Tea Party at Aston Hall" and looking on the internet it was held in honour of Joseph Chamberlain's 70th birthday. There is some writing on the bottom of the card that mentions Austen Chamberlain, Miss Dundas, and the...

    Facades

Note the very distinctive red sign for kebabs etc which helps identify a building in Broad Street (opposite the Novotel) from a) the front and b) above. The façade doesn't seem to be in keeping with the rest of the building. Dave.
