    Write it down

From the Goonshow. "What time is it Eccles"? "Just a minute, I've got it written down on a piece of paper." Brilliant. Can't get YouTube video to load. Sorry

    Write it down

I did keep a Boots diary from1958 to 1967 and here are three of the earliest entries. I am aged 15 and a bit. Thursday 2nd January 1958: "Went to Lewis's sale. Bought a tub of Gropax seed, giant chabaud carnations mixed. Mom had cold and stayed in bed all day. Bought also 12 plant labels for 4...

    Stickleback fishing

How about visiting Sarehole Mill and looking for sticklebacks along the River Cole. Used to find them in that area in my youth but we are talking over 60 years ago.

    The Outer Circle

A version I heard was that Prime Minister Edward Heath was at 10 Downing Street and advised that he should be seen travelling on buses. His response was "Oh very well. Have one sent round for me".

    The Outer Circle

Awful news. The round-around number 11 Outer Circle bus route is an icon of Birmingham. The next thing to happen will be the filling-in of canals so that we have fewer than Venice! Dave.

    Edgbaston High School for Girls

Presumably this is King Edward VI High School for Girls which moved from New Street to Edgbaston in 1940. A very highly-regarded independent secondary school for girls in Birmingham.

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Going very strong. Another rapid riser was "these trying times" where we talked about our experiences during the first lockdown. This reached 1485 posts and 75 pages in 89 days. It was terminated on June 14th 2020. Old Birmingham Photos from STEVEBHx took 94 days to reach 1485 posts but is still...

    old car snaps

Not an old car but the back of an old lorry. Very clear registration number DOP 661. Does anyone know when this may have been introduced? I'm trying to date this photograph as the person in the foreground is my mother. Could be early 1950s? Many thanks. Looking more closely it could be DDP. Dave.

Holidays : Holidays at home and days out

The reason you saw two terns is because one good tern deserves another.

Grammar schools and comprehensives in Birmingham in the 50s and 60s.

Hi daithelife. You did very well at Grammar School. May I ask if you were an only-child? There have been some suggestions on this thread that only-children were more likely to be financed by their parents (paying for uniforms and sports kit etc) to get into Grammar School and perhaps, also. they...

King Edwards Grammar School Camp Hill

I got on very well with Dai Thomas. It so happened that History was my best subject at "O" Level and I received a personal "well done" from him. However, the Sciences were not far behind in achievement and I focused on Chemistry for later studies and for my career.

King Edwards Grammar School Camp Hill

Mr. Holllingworth retired in July 1956, just prior to the move to Kings Heath, after 38 years at the school. I attach a press cutting reporting his retirement and also a photograph taken in the main corridor of the old school together with the Deputy Headmaster, Mr. P. W. Bates.

King Edwards Grammar School Camp Hill

I just missed being taught by Mr Poppleton as I entered Camp Hill in September 1954 and he left a few months earlier. There was a short write-up about him in the school magazine of Spring 1955. "Mr. Poppleton left us at Easter 1954 to join the staff at Handsworth Grammar School. He came to Camp...

    Covid vaccination process

Had the second jab of the Astra Zeneca vaccine this morning at the mass vaccination centre at Epsom Racecourse. Much busier than when I had my first jab in early February. Longer queues but they moved quite quickly. Good to see younger people being vaccinated. This centre will close from 16th...

    Grand Hotel Colmore Row

At last, the Grand Hotel in Colmore Row should start reopening on Tuesday May 18th. I have never stayed there but might give myself a treat, one day, if it is not excessively expensive.

    OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Assume that this is half way along Hall Green Parade. I left Hall Green in 1967 but looks as if Boots the Chemists (extreme left) was still there in 1974. Dave

Scams: Telephone, email, texts, other 2021

Hi Pete. That reminded me to top-up my mobile phone on EE. I have a plan for which I pay £10 a month. Asked for email address and password and everything seemed to go smoothly. Confirmation email and text within a minute for successful top-up. One thing I do for this and other sites is to reject...

    Census 2021

I think the US Immigration form used to ask whether you had ever been convicted of an act of moral turpitude? Definition of this is "an act or behaviour that gravely violates the sentiment or accepted standard of the community". Always told that you had to put United Kingdom as country of...

    Hall Green Schools

I lived in Sarehole Road. The walk to York Road School would involve walking up Cubley Road, across the traffic lights at the Stratford Road near the Rialto and then directly into York Road. Hall Green Parade was the centre for shops and catching buses into town or a Midland Red, much less...
