    Rackhams Store

I suppose everything has to change and I expect Rackham's is catering to the younger generation now. They seem to have the 'disposable income' don't they?

    Black Swan, Erdington

I know this is a very long time ago and a long shot but I have been puzzing for ages over this document from the archives. I'm presuming (despite my motto of 'never presume') that Fipehall is Pipe Hall and as there is a mention of 'Hayes' it's around that area. As you know, Aston covered a large...

    Metro progress 2021

Before this thread closes tomorrow, has anyone any idea about when the service will be running to Broad Street again please? I know the trams aren't ideal but I found them really useful for getting to the library (and the Jewellery Qtr). Thanks.

    Winson Green Prison

It's a shame that whenever Winson Green is mentioned everyone immediately thinks of the prison. On our son's birth certificate place of birth of father (given as Dudley Road Hospital) was entered as Winson Green. Luckily my husband can see the funny side.

Water : Springs and wells of Birmingham

Hard to believe that there are still countries having to drink water much worse than ours ever was and having to walk miles to fetch it.

    Greyhound, Court Lane

I have been meaning to post an update on this thread as a little more information came to light on another one - 'Probate Query 1700's' we now have the pub back to at least 1736 due to probate listing probably because of an unexpected death. It mentions a cellar with beer related barrels and...

Not quite, Fleurdelys, it was on yesterday!

    MY FIRST/SECOND GRANDCHILD

Lovely pictures from everyone. We spent Christmas Day with our youngest granddaughter and family and it was a smashing day. Peace on Earth was not evident as at 2+ she's more like a 'monkey on a bit of elastic' which I'm sure many of you will be familiar with.

    Cherrywood Road School Photos

Hi Sue, Des only had brothers and I think Carol's name has come up before and as far as I can remember isn't a relative although she may be connected in the dim and distant past. I'll see what Des remembers on Friday.

    Cherrywood Road School Photos

I am trying to get information out of my husband about Cherrywood School but it's proving hard work this morning! Graham (Jennings) was at Cherrywood between 1961 and 1966 and remembers Mr McGuffy, Mr Clark, Mr Tennant the English teacher and Miss Edgerton (the last one only vaguely). Mr...

    Probate Query from 1700's

Thanks to everyone for their input. I've been fascinated by the information that you've all supplied regarding the structure but also about the origin of the word 'thrall'. Apparently it meant 'in slavery or bondage' which would mean that the barrels were kept in place and also adds weight to...

Thanks Dave, that saying now makes a lot of sense.

Silver Boxes for Long Term Service/Gladys Villers

PS. Jill, did you see the other thread for Lucas's? I posted a picture of Christmas 1951 and if my maths are right your aunt would have been working there then.

Silver Boxes for Long Term Service/Gladys Villers

Good Morning Jill, sorry for the delay. I had to wait for Stephen to get back to home territory so that he could look at both items. He messaged me this morning with the following information: Lucas awards: Copper plaque presented 1950 for 25 years service Silver box presented 1965 for 40 years...

    Probate Query from 1700's

Thank you Janice. I wonder if they're still there? I want to pop in at some point and I'll ask while I'm there. On a another, very small note, I think the last word on that line is 'bench' rather than beer, unfortunately. The same word appears in the kitchen section and the parlour together...

Silver Boxes for Long Term Service/Gladys Villers

My aunt, Lilian Bennett, had a silver box from Lucas's and I'm pretty sure it was for 25 years as she then had a plaque for 40 years service. My cousins are coming over tomorrow and I'll ask them to confirm this as one of them still has the box.
