Thanks for that info Phil,I don't know how long they made tin trunks there,or when the company ceased trading,it was certainly still there in the 50's,because my Grandmother (T Cole's daughter) was still working there, until she retired in her 70's !
My great grandfather owned the tin trunk factory, his name was Thomas Owen Cole,I don't remember him though,he died when I was about 7,but I do recall visiting there once or twice in the late 1940's,I can still smell that paint !
Yes,I spent a few Saturday nights in there, often making a hasty exit when one of the numerous fights broke out ! Another hang out was "The Jungle" coffee bar down Snow Hill, can't find any pics. of that though !
Ha,it might have been the fog, because on a right pea-souper of a night in 1962,my best mate Tony drove his "Ford Falcon Special" straight across from Walford Road up the kerb and into that brick wall !!!!
I've seen this picture before and yes, you're right it seems strange, looks like the dark area has been superimposed over the original white van !
Ah,the Modernaires,,,,Micky Bakewell,great singer !!
That's an interesting picture of Alex' food bar in Dudley Street, never new it had been there,it was on the corner of Hinckley Street and Hill Street when I first encountered it in about 1959.That site is still there, minus Alex's of course !
Great to see these pics. of Steelhouse Lane,my first job when I left school in 1958 was at Wesleyan & General.I remember the snooker hall on the upper floor of the building with the tower and I used to scurry down Upper Priory
in my lunch hour to the Casino for an hour's jiving !
Great to see this picture of shops on the "Cov" ,especially Coronet Motors,I bought my first m/bike from them in 1960,a little Triumph Tiger Cub,I can still remember the reg. 664 KHA !
I haven't been in the pub for many years, but the last time I walked by there (last summer) I noticed that the licencee's name was female, can't remember what it was though !
