    Sawmill Staniforth Street.

My husband's grandmother was Ellen Standley (parents Samuel and Susannah) from Staniforth Street - I'm having problems tracing her because her name was variously listed as Ellen; Hellenor (Marriage cert to Joseph Hobson) and Hilda (1911 census). Could be a relation Steve?

Dentistry past and present in Brum

I remember visiting the Dental Hospital with youngest son when he was 10 days old (he's now 46). He was born with a tooth and had to have it extracted because it was rubbing his tongue when he fed. The nurses were fighting over who should carry him in and said he never made a sound when the...

Wasn't the Old Square beautiful? And we replaced it with ......... traffic!

    Birmingham Statue Campaign

I have to confess that I'm so used to it now that I hardly notice it - but I don't admire (and never have done) Anthony Gormleys statue "Rusty Man" in Victoria Square. Yet I did enjoy seeing other works by Mr Gormley: The people on the beach at Crosby and the statue in the crypt of Winchester...

Blimey, you didn't mess with the law (or the gentry!) then did you? We had peacocks that visited our garden when we lived in Bampton (Devon). The noise they make early in the morning is awful and, though I wouldn't throw stones at them, I was sorely tempted to tie up their beaks!!!

Passages, Alleyways Gulletts and Snickets of Old Brum

I reckon it's appreciated by a lot of folk on here Dennis. I always find your posts informative and interesting, as do many others I'm sure. Many, many thanks for all the research and hard work!

    Library Of Birmingham 2013

I was at the Everyman last week and it's (in my opinion) worthy of the prize! So ... B'ham Library didn't win, gosh that''s a surprise.

    the old fox fleet street

Some of my family lived 3/16 Fleet Street in 1881. So that makes sense, great grandad would never have been TOO far away from a pub!

    Lea Hall Handsworth

Ooooh .. do tell Ray! I used to go to the Lea Hall club around 1956. There was a dance floor and a bar, I remember. Don't know anything about the history of the place I'm afraid so would be interested to hear Ray's stories. The only interest I had at my time in Lea Hall was how to get a drink (I...

    Standley

Thanks: Yes that's them. I think I'll just carry on as before, without Ellen's birth certificate. Wonder why she put "Hellenor" as her name on the marriage cert - maybe she was just trying to sound posh!

    Standley

Thanks, we actually sent for that cert., convinced it was the right one. Nope: Husband's Ellen's parents were Samuel and Susan or Susannah. Thanks anyway.

    Standley

Steve: My husband's grandmother was a Standley. Her name was Ellen and she was born in 1853. On the wedding cert (1872) she gave her name as Hellenor, then she was Ellen and on the 1901 census she was listed as Hilda! The family came from Gt Russell Street and Staniforth Street so I guess it's...

    Slums

Amazing photographs Carol, in some cases those could have been Victorian children. It makes you realise that although a lot of us were poor, we were rich compared to some poor beggars.

    Jewellery Quarter 1990s

Thanks Mike. It's such a beautiful building with very ornate corbels etc. I remember Gomm's from when I worked at Toye Kenning and Spencer in Warstone Lane. We sometimes farmed our medal orders out to them (and probably vise versa)

    George and Dragon Albion Street

All the interior furnishings etc have long gone - either by damp and mould, demolition works... or thieving little toerags!

    Jewellery Quarter 1990s

The Regent Street one is a beautiful building. My friend and I decided that cream and white would have been better than the (very) pale pink and white that they used! Just our observations, but I'm just glad it's been restored/repainted anyway! Anyone know who used to occupy Sovereign Hall in...
