    Jazz Clubs

Do you mean Dan Pawson? Sadly he died some time ago at a relatively young age.

    Then & Now

Ah, but you see we could get a No16 bus from St. Mary's Church direct to Hamstead Colliery. We did use Perry Barr and Perry Hall park, but that meant a long walk along Putney Road/Livingstone Road to get the bus on Birchfield Road - or walk some more - and that ate into our day out. So....idle...

    Then & Now

I used to have picnics at Hamstead Colliery! It was a day out for us kids .... jam sandwiches and a bottle of pop, lovely - and we thought we were in the country!

    Site crash 2015

Many thanks Warren for all your hard work. The ads at the top of the page don't bother me at all - and neither did the "crash" coz my lappie went crazy yesterday as well (lovely man fixed it this morning...phew).

    When Everyone Wore A Hat...

My aunt used to say that. Apparently it means a hat with a large brim so that they can't get close enough to punch you on the nose!

    Moderators

Thanks Wendy .... hope it's just lack of time though and that you and Mike are OK.

    Poldark

I am a wench Nico. I think Aiden would have a job on his hands trying to rip off those rubber buttons!

    Poldark

I haven't worn a liberty bodice in years - but if that means Aidan Turner will rip it off, then I'm willing to be persuaded to return to them, with or without the blob of mud.

    Birmingham Jazz Alive & Well

I can't get to Walmley either (wish I could though) but love reading about the jazz there and elsewhere. We do go to the Friday early evenings at Symphony Hall sometimes - Brian Corbett was great last week and our son's friend Neil Bullock was on drums.

    When Everyone Wore A Hat...

I guess they were their handbags Viv. Agree about wearing a hat in the cold weather - agree but don't do it myself!!

    Paradise Circus

Me too Eric. Good riddance to all the bleak, ill lit areas of Paradise Place!

Just beautiful Eric ... as usual!

    Birmingham Jazz Alive & Well

I used to enjoy most of the bands/groups mentioned above. Plus, don't forget Dick Charlesworth. Great nights at the Midland Jazz Club, Piccadilly Jazz Club and the West End (with its springy dance floor). Now wishing I lived nearer Sutton Coldfield!!!

    Key Hill Tavern

That's a lovely photograph Wendy, thanks for posting it for the Forum members that don't use Facebook (i.e. ME)! Thanks to Janice Andrews also.

    Loving the stories Eddie!

    Pubs Of The Past

I've travelled past that pub many times but never been inside. My goodness .. what a beautiful pub! I do hope it can be saved, but personally I doubt it, the location is not right these days. Hopefully they can preserve some of the wonderful tiles and decoration though - let's hope they don't...

    Lea Hall Handsworth

Wonderful! I wished I'd had an interest in history when I visited. As Wendy said, how lovely to have lived there.

    Toye & Co

Just watched the programme, many thanks Viv for providing the information and link. Yes, it was fascinating, I remember Mr Bert Toye well and, of course, his son Brian (he spelled it with an "i" then, not a "y" - must have gone up in the world, lol). Brian looks so different now, he was quite a...

    Toye & Co

Darn it, I missed that! Will take a look on iPlayer. I worked in the sales office in Warstone Lane (actually a cubbyhole most of the time) of Toye Kenning and Spencer, starting when it was named W. J. Dingley around 1959 and finishing when it was TK&S in 1965. Brian Toye was in charge then, with...
